To me, his live Marshall tone isn't that good but the studio tone is ace.

I prefer his Laney tone live but not in studio.

Damn, how unfortunate.

Though I'm a metal fan and player:

Anything from the 70's that has a true bypass with a light crunch, then played through a Big Muff and a Les Paul.

So fat, heavy, and...luscious.

That, and any tones that Santana and Satch have produced.

For metal:
Devin Townsend in general
My Dying Bride's "Turn Loose the Swans"
Vader - "Litany"
Opeth - "Mornignrise"
Dream Theater - Awake

Among others.

Eric Clapton during the Bluesbreaker to Derek and the Dominoes had a killer creamy sweet edgy tone (his live tone was also tonebliss)

Jimmy Page live tone throughout his career has had this hard tone that is awesome.

Tony Iommi's live tone and that during Paranoid is awesome.

Jimi Hendrix's tone gives me a tonegasm. It's great.

The three Kings (Albert, B.B. and Freddie) tone's are in a league of its own.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's strat tone is killer along with Buddy Guy's
