I don't know much about bikes, but I have to ride a mountain bike up and down steep hills every morning to get to work. I get what the gears on the right handle bar work, but how do the gears on the left handle bar work?

One is for the front gears, one is for the back gears.

Right gear shifter is for rear wheel cassette. Left is for front 3 chainrings. if your in gear 4 in the back you want to be in 2 up front so you dont cross shift and ruin chain.

hope that helps
