It's a poll of personal preferance. Different people find it easier using different techniques. For instance, I down stroke where as my guitar teacher and 2 of my mates both alternate.
#4
No.

It is played with downstrokes. That's how metallica play it to get the aggressive attack.
#5
alt=pick easy, slight difference sound
down= the way metallica does it and gets the more "aggressive attack" as mazzakakaazzza (or however you spell it) said
#6
It's downstrokes and I personally downstroke but it's whatever suits you.

Yes. Well done. But some people DO play it with alternate picking. Like I said "personal preferance"

So they're doing it wrong.

It sounds different then. Not only slightly, but very different. Even though I see where you are coming from, I'd say playing it with alternate picking is wrong. just doesn't sound right.

Metallica uses downstroke but some may find alternate easier. I use downstroke when I play Master of Puppets.

i think alternate picking gives you more stamina and slightly more accuracy, but than you have the aggression of the downstrokes

i would personally go for alternate picking
#17
Hetfield has stated many times he plays it using downstrokes.
If everything could ever feel this real forever,
If anything could ever be this good again,
The only thing I'll ever ask of you,
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when.
#18
If you are just learning the song for the first time, then alternate pick it, but try to use downstrokes as soon as possible. Its good for building up downstroke speed for beginners. Also, you need to be able to downstroke to play the whole song, as you cant alternate pick the spider riff near the beginning.
#19
downstrokes, i dont have the stamina for it though

LOL. I would like to see a video of someone doing this :P.

I do both, on topic. I'm much better at playing it alternate, but I'm slowly getting there with pure downstroke.

Wrong again

Is all come down to personal's preference. If you wanna play it exactly like Hetfield, then you must downtrokes on every note, including the harmonized solo and Hetfield's solo.

I prefer to play the "spider riff" with uptrokes on the B string. It sounds almost the same because those notes is not entirely palm muted.

For what is worth, even the monster Petrucci use alternate picking on the spider riff and sometimes even on the main riff.
Besides being a guitar player, I'm a big fan of the guitar. I love that damn instrument. Steve Vai

I alternate pick it. I just can't be arsed to build up my downpicking speed since its the only song that I would use that technique for anyway.

Downpick it. Stop being a wuss.

If you're going to be playing metal you have to learn how to downpick faster songs or else you're going to miss out on a whole different level of aggressiveness in your music. James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine started to downpick fast riffs because it sounds alot tighter and just really benefits the song.

Later on down the road you'll be alternative picking Master of Puppets and something will sound WAY off and you'll be sorry that you didn't take the time to learn it properly. Seriously, from experiance, learn it right the first time and you'll be better off.

Down Strokes. It sounds more fitting than alternate. Although down strokes are harder to keep up with the song.

If you're good at alt picking you can get the riff to sound the same as all downs anyway.

generally down picking gets that da da da da da da sound whereas alt picking tends to have a more da dun da dun da dun sound. Its possible to play alternate picking and make it sound more uniform like all downs if you practice it.

Then I haven't ever heard anyone who's good enough at alternate picking...
#35
You can get it to sound exactly the same both ways however both ways have their difficulties.

All down-strokes = Harder physically

All Alternating = Harder technically

I can play it both ways but I tend to use downs as I like to reming myself of the noob days when I didn't care about alternate picking just yet.

IMO the people that claim to be able to hear the difference between alternate picking and downstrokes are the same type of person that claims a strat sounds different if u take the cover off the back.

Furthermore in my opinion, i believe that if these people actually exist then I am Barack Obama.

you can hear the difference, go downpick some open E notes and then alternate them, you hear the difference as clear as night and day
