I'm looking to get a new amp for somewhere between $400-$600. I dont want to spend more than 600. I'm not sure if i should get a stack or a combo amp.

Got any recommendations? I play hardcore metal, lots of distortion, squealies, sweeps, leads and crunchy rythym. I'd also like to get the most out of my Boss MT-2 Twilight Zone Modded pedal.

Try out the Peavey Vypyr. It's got more distortion than anyone could ever need and sounds pretty good too. Too many features to list.

You can get better than a Vypyr for $600.

Try a cheap tube amp, can't think of many for that price at the moment but go to you local store and try everything, see what you like best.

Gigging or just home practice?
If you play with a drummer with any regularity look for a...
Used PV 5150, XXX, JSX, Ultra. Mesa F-series, DC series. B-52AT112, JCM900 yadda yadda yadda...
At that price range I would look at combo's, stacks will be out of your grasp unless you get lucky trolling the used sites.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

Abismal.

Do you gig or just home practice? What is the closest major city for purposes of finding good gear used?

Right now we are just practice, but we plan to gig small venue's in the near future. I live in Western Massachusetts, craigslist, daddy's junky music, etc...

what about line 6?

Yer 3 for 3 on bad ideas off zounds.

Let's see what clist has.

http://westernmass.craigslist.org/msg/1054491972.html If you have to go the halfstack way, VK and a Laney cab. $500-600. Some people flame it, it's a budget tube head that can get somewhat heavy on it's own but likes to be boosted.

Bloo Voodoo-doo Some people like them, some flame them. Better for what you play than the 3 zounds options. $550
http://albany.craigslist.org/msg/1033552274.html

VK Head alone
http://westernmass.craigslist.org/msg/1054491972.html $350 - could come down.

Now there is a XXX head for $700, which is a much higher end head, another planet from the VK.
Laney AOR 50 $350 http://albany.craigslist.org/msg/1047439606.html

Here is a good cab for any head you end up with.
http://albany.craigslist.org/msg/1063416303.html Avatar 2x12 $250 There are 2 more for $300 with different speakers/tolex.

Or troll a while longer for a 5150 or XXX combo in your range.

This doesnt really leave me with anything. Again i'm looking for a decent amp within the 400-600 range, no higher. Are none of the solid state amps at this price worth it? I found that Marshall stack on Craigslist for 400 bucks.....is it still not worth it?

Also, right now i am using a Peavey Bandit 112, how does the Vypyr compare?

I'd like to get something soon, lol, my guitar is coming in the mail!!!! I just got a Schecter Damien FR.

A used 5150 or used Triple XXX. Thats the best I can think of, there also may be some good used Mesas and Randalls.

One of my friends had this amp, it was good for awhile, not the greatest distortion but it was good. Then after a year or so it started to sound worse.

Peavey Vypyr Tube series....great amps....and make sure to get the sanpera pedal, i have the I model, the II model has much more features, you won't have to buy a single pedal, trust me...

great amp

^^^ Just saw the sanpera II's and they seem a little cheap, considering what they cost.

I would look into that laney, or that VK Deal. Hell id even look into the Blue Voo Doo before i looked into any of those SS's. You can find a good SS amp for that range, but what your lookin for isnt a great route.

Sounds like you just want a stack, to have a stack. Correct?

this is overkill already for bedroom/small gigs

Why not look into a Randall RG50TC? It's very reasonably priced, should suit your needs almost perfectly, and is WAY easier to transport than any halfstack on the planet.
ESP LTD EC-256 and a Fender Deluxe VM
