For my sociology midterm i have to name 5 hip hop songs from before 2000 and compare them with 5 songs from this year. in analyzing each song, i have to find if it has a sense of rebellion (which supposedly older stuff should have had before it turned mainstream), if it establishes "street credibility" for the artist, or any other elements associated with hiphop culture.
please no stupid nonserious posts because i already know that this is my college's attempt to make hip hop look more important than it actually is (and i'm not at all say it hasn't had influence, but this class really blows it out of proportion)

shortcut : need to find and analyze 5 older songs, preferably ones with a political kind of message or call for social change etc. and 5 songs from this yea to see if becoming mainstream has changed hiphop

many thanks

Edit: nevermind, youtube it, you'll get some good songs

Uhh...before 2000, pretty much ALL of it was actually about social change.

Try some Public Enemy.

2000 = Eminem (the slim shady LP, marshall mathers LP)

Topics.

Urban crimes
Misogyny
Race
Turf war
Social status amongst young black males and the stigma
Stereotypes

I'd use Eminem as a case study as he is slightly different due to his race.

Don't forget most Rap musicians (rappers) come from the 'ghetto', deprived broken families with poverty and poor education.

Liquid Swords - RZA

for modern day:

Kanye West (who I love by the way) is a guy who rejects the "gangsta rap" image. I think that would be a good point to make. 808's and Heartbreak is more electro ballads compared to hip-hop.

Again I cant stress how cool Kanye is. Just a good point for you to use.

Retaliation by Jedi Mind Tricks is one of my recommendations. Or everything off of the "VIolent by Design" album.

To everyone that says "rap sucks metal 4 lyfe lol", please, stop being a moron. THere's a difference between being ignorant about it and not liking it. I'm a die-hard metal fan, and I highly enjoy hip-hop.
