If i'm to play a solo to a backing track that goes just straight CMaj7, what scale would be best to use? When i try it just sounds false.

Cmaj
D Dorian
E Phrygian
F Lydian
G Mixolydian
A Aeolian
B Locraine

C Lydian would be my choice - C D E F# G A B
There's my way and the wrong way.

Major, Lydian, or harmonic major are your safest choices.

It's a good idea to move in and out of these three scales. You can briefly play in harmonic minor too.

no.

TS - C major is the way to go.

Your tonal centre is in C , and C major contains all the notes of your chord...the root, 5th, 3rd and 7th. C Lydian will work okay too, a static backing is a good device to use when exploring modes.

Nope.

TS said there's only a CM7 played, hence the root is constant C, so all the intervals you play are related to that.

The note you play will be ornamentation to the C Major 7 Harmony.

Ie. If you play a D note over it, you will just imply CM7sus2.

there are no "relatives" to use in this situation - you've only got a C chord...anything in the key of A has nothing to do with it. It doesn't matter if you hate referring to things as major, which incidentally is retarded, the fact of the matter is it IS major.
