A lot of American bands use standard tuning dropped by half a step (i.e. eb Bb Gb Db Ab Eb). Does anyone know why this tuning has become so popular? Surely it doesn't make that much difference to a band's sound to be able to play their lowest note a semi tone lower?

It's so irritating playing stuff by Sonata Arctica, Kamelot and Guns N Roses and then having to uptune to play something by Nighwish or Metallica.

They do it for the singer. Singing really high can be hard, so if you drop down a half a step it would be a little bit easier to hit the note. It's not so much about the guitar. I've noticed that Metallica does this when they play live.

I dunno why everyone else does it but my band does it for the singer... that half step drop means he can sing like the best of them as opposed to standard which he has troubles with....

Idk, but I really like the sound of drop tuning. I usually stay tuned to a certain song for a while ( I never uptune by guitar back up to E,A,D,G,B,E unless important)

loosens the strings a bit, makes it easier to play faster

Singer true,

But a note differs pretty much of the note one step higher,

An E is an E and a Eb = Eb,

Just to be cool xd
