So lately, even though I mainly play metal, and was an active pickup guy for a while, now I've been finding myself liking passives again (I have a Jackson DK2M w/passives in it).

Now this isn't a "what pickup should I buy?" thread, but merely a quick question. Originally, what attracted me to EMG's in the first place were their clarity and tight low end respsonse. But now I find they sound kind of sterile and artificial, and they loose the "woody" feel of a passive. Muddiness is originally what caused me to shy away from high output passives in the first place.

But one thing I was thinking, was that the stock passives in my explorer were both ceramic magnet pickups. Is this the reason the tone was a mudfest at times? Would going with a hot bridge pickup, and a milder neck pickup fix this problem? (We'll throw a DiMarzio Super Distortion/PAF Pro combo as an example).
