It's bad to fall asleep to music. It also keeps you awake because you mind is subconsciously engaging to the audio stimulation.

I'm a fan of blues to sleep to. Mostly instrumentals, but it can have words, I'm not picky. I really like Jimi Hendrix's blues album, soooo relaxing. Also Janis Joplin works and Sublime, Nirvana Unplugged... I dunno, anything acoustic or slow.

Sometimes I hear the music that is on my stereo, in my sleep. It's amazing, cause it'll go with something in my dream and I'll be like "sweet, music in my dream" and then I'll wake up and be like "oh, its only you."

Cannibal Corpse. I can testify for myself, a friend and another friend's 50 year old aunt.
No, I'm not joking. CC is excellent sleeping music.

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever ago or some Explosions in the Sky are pretty easy going, you could try them, also someone above mentioned Iron and Wine, another option there.

Slow tempo, clean/acoustic guitars.
Namely just about anything off of Opeth's Damnation album, and the song To Bid You Farewell....wow...
Porcupine Tree also have a lot of slow atmospheric songs too.

In lieu of a playlist, Radiohead's In Rainbows album does wonders for me. Not hard rocking, a nice dreamy sound...it works.

If not, I'd say any kind of mellower acoustic/ambient/instrumental would work in a playlist.
