What exactly is the definition of metalcore? I don't get how a band like Trivium is labeled metalcore where as a band like Avenged Sevenfold is considered regular metal?

A7X isn't metal at all. If anything, they are hard rock, with some metal and commercial pop influence

metalcore, or NWOAHM, is a brand of metal that began, in the late 80's or so, to infuse simpler, hardcore-influenced riffs and styles into their playing. emphasis on clean vocals in choruses became evident and the use of "mid-paced groove riffs" that focus more on being catchy emerged.

and A7X is not metal. that's already been covered.

of course, there are bands that manage to break this definition while still being labeled as metalcore, but this is the easiest definition to use nowadays. the truth is that it's a genre that's gone down the tubes since the days of Botch and Converge. now it's used as a blanket term for any band that's not considered "tr00" metal.
