I'm wondering what scales and modes would be most beneficial to a metal/hard rock guitarist. What do you guys recommend?

All of them..............................................................ever.
"I was influenced to play the guitar after I saw the guy on Power Rangers do it. I figured it would be easy, since a guitar is basically a big kazoo."

Gear:
Epiphone Les Paul
Fender Blues Deville(For now... FOR SALE )

I kind of figured.
In particular though, are there any that should take special precedence. I don't do much w/ major scales. I do, however, practice minor pentatonics, minor (normal, melodic, and harmonic) scales, as well ad phrygian. Are there any others I should focus on, especially for solos?

Major is the basis for pretty much everything.... so I'd suggest that...

Minor Scale is the Major Scale with the 3rd, 6th, and 7th flattened..etc.

Please add me if as a friend I helped! (I like to think I'm a friendly person)

i would say all of them definitely.
but great starting point.
pentatonic in all 5 positions.
remeber their all transposable (can be played in any key)
these scales are the fundamentals or
basis of most solos.
zakk wylde, slash, jimmy page, hendricks, kirk hammett, etc all use pentatonic
at some point, so id say maybe start there for ease and then
gradually expand your scale bank
