Hey guys, I just got my new Peavey Bandit 112 today! I ordered it like the Fourth but I was willing to wait for my amp. So I pulled it out excited and something was telling me something was going to go wrong, I had problems with the seller before I even received it, off of ebay.

Anyways, there's a TON of humming, and when I changed the settings on the amp, it crackles, pops, and clips. I'm not sure if it's something I can fix, or if I should spend the money to repair. Should I try to fix it, or request a refund? Halp!

I also have no sound clips because I have no camera and I don't htink my computer mic could take the sound without crapping out.

I think those have a 12AX7 preamp tube no? If so replace it. with anything.

Otherwise, if you are sure it is not your guitar, cable, jack, etc then it maybe a

( hardware/software issue...hard to fix and maybe not so much worth it to fix).

Is it possible to try a different guitar at a different location to see if there is a difference?

Well I have another amp, but I'm sure it's not my guitar, I used it today with another Bandit and it was fine. It's not a tube amp, it's a transtube, which kinda emulates a tube sound.

right. ok. no preamp tube...sorry.

try isolating your amp to a new clean circuit (power) and make sure you don't have pup problem/jack problem. Jacks are easy to replace. Transtube...not so much.

PS - I'm sure I am overlooking something. What is the full name of the Bandit? year? Rep ebay dealer?
#5
The ebay dealer has a 100% feedback, but it was not his amp. It's a Peavey Bandit 112, not sure of the year, but it looks like the same model as the one I used today at school. I can take pics from my phone if you'd like. I'm pretty sure it's not the outlet, I use the same one from my other amp. How can I check my pups and jack?

play a long note and jiggle jacks on guitar and amp.

use the link in my sig to see if you can find the deal.

A bad volume/gain/ or otherwise pot could cause that too I'm thinking. Those are easy to replace too. Generally. When does the 'crackle' come in?

..
#7
Honestly, man, send that **** back. If he sent you a broken amp, then you deserve your money back. You should get another one that actually works right the first time.
I'm putting my GAS on hold
for a couple months in order to pimp my ride.

Don't judge me.
#9
K crappy camera phone pics. The crackling usually happens when I mess around with gain settings and it was real bad with the high knob. And apparently the guy went to a "professional packaging" place, and all the box had was a couple layers of bubble wrap for the top and a few handfuls of foam...

Front

Set in the middle, dunno what it is

Speaker

Electronics

Not sure what this thing is, but it's attatched to the electronics by a chord, and it has like springs in it I think...

I can tell you my exact settings too if it'd help. And it's not the pups, there was absolutely not crackle when I hit the switch, but there was A LOT again when I turned the High knob in the lead channel again.

If it is happening on the gain section then I would be more inclined to think it was a transtube issue. Especially if your cleans are clean. Man....I don't know. I'm not an amp tech. See if seller will pay for repair? Or come back with:

K well I got if for a total of 162$, and I know a good working one sounds GREAT. I'd be willing to invest some more money to make this thing work, anywhere from 50-100.

My budget for a new amp?

If I can get a full refund for this, I'd like to get a new guitar as well but I can put that off for a while. I should get another check this weekend for 50, and I'm going to work four days next week so that's about another 200 dollar check.

Budget: 410~
Home, practicing and possibly playing over a drummer as well. Probably no gigs.
Metal, hard rock, Metalcore, hardcore, and some alternative
I'd prefer New so something like this doesn't happen again, but I'll go used if I can try it out first.

U.S. MSRP $719.99
:/ Maybe I could find it on sale but I don't want to go used again. Will this amp really kick that much ass, or if I decide to spend that much on an amp should I really just look to spend that much extra on something I'd need to upgrade later? I'm not really that good yet, but the Bandit fitted my needs for a good price.

Hmm... it'd be worth it. How long would I need to wait for it though? Q2 2009...? There's going to be a school concert at the end of May.

60 watts is pretty manageable and I just saw it has line out for recording and possible a headphone which would be a serious plus.

I just got off the phone with a dude at GC and as soon as they are 'orderable' in their system you can go in an prepay and wait. My guess is they will be on back order for awhile until supply catches demand.

Find a peavey dealer and ask. I hear some stores may have special treatement order wise.

The only downsides that I see on this amp is that it is made overseas (prolly China) and it has a Sheffield speaker. Not bad, but a better speaker will probably help this amp a lot. I know the Valvekings are made in China but have faired pretty well I would say in the QC deptartment. Some may disagree.

I'm really tempted to prepay for one of these things if I can sell some stuff off.

Q2 I believe starts April 1 so April - May - June time frame. Tough call.

Hm, well I mean I have the same exact amp at my school, but it's the schools. But I'd like something better than a Spider to practice on at home... Gr I could normally wait but I may need an amp now...

Well I'm going to have 200 made for spring break, and I should have a pay check or two this weekend for about 50 or a 100, so I make about 50-100 a week normally... Lemme do some math. Ok... So I'll have about 500 if I make 50 for each week till May, and if I get my amp refunded, which I should, that's another 160 on top of that, which is 660$

And no, there's another Bandit at school, same model and everything. And it sounds NICE I love it.

I've heard the B-52 is amazing, but do those all flex well? From your experience which is best, and how much would it cost to replace those B-52 tubes? I've never owned a tube amp.

I'm not sure what you mean by flex. You mean are they flexible? Some claim they can get fender cleans and brootalz on a B52 AT. I've never played one. PM Bulletrocks522 or whatever his name is on B52 and my list. If you can't stretch your budget I'd probably go with Randall or the new 6505 combo or a tube Vypyr.

new tubes on-line would be around $100

The VKs need different speaker and tubes imo so that's $200. The Vk with B52 might work. Again, OD pedal and possibly new tubes too.
#30
Do not invest more money. The amp has bad and/or dirty pots. You already paid the max for that amp. If the seller misrepresented it then protest the payment. If he didn't misrepresent it then get some contact cleaner like DeoxIT. Take out the amp module and spray it inside the pots. Work the pots when spraying to clean up the corrosion.

BTW, I sold one just like it on Craigslist for $125. It's a decent amp.
#31
Well I like it a lot and it suits my needs really well. If it's that easy to fix, I'd do it, but I doubt it'd be that easy. And another 50 bucks wouldn't hurt me. But I don't want to risk trying to fix it, and not be able to get a refund, so I'm going to refund it, rather than screw someone else over.
