I expect to see a TON of people say Bob Dylan, and while I love Dylan, he's too cliche.

So I'm picking Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine.

Your turn.
He's a freak of nature, but we love him so.

I'd say Leadbelly is my favorite political lyricist. Listen to The Bourgeois Blues and I think you'll see why. Neil Young is another favorite.

de la Rocha is pretty cliche himself. He's just angrier about it. That and Bob Dylan created most of the cliches.

Now, my favorite would be Bruce Springsteen. Now, I know a lot of people think of him as a bombastic rock and roller, but he has written some pretty good political lyrics.

"From the Monongaleh valley
To the Mesabi iron range
To the coal mines of Appalacchia
The story's always the same
Seven-hundred tons of metal a day
Now sir you tell me the world's changed
Once I made you rich enough
Rich enough to forget my name"

"Well my daddy come on the 0hio works
When he come home from world war two
Now the yards just scrap and rubble
He said, "Them big boys did what Hitler couldn't do"
These mills they built the tanks and bombs
That won this country's wars
We sent our sons to Korea and Vietnam
Now we're wondering what they were dyin' for"

"I got my finger on the trigger
But I don't know who to trust
When I look into your eyes
There's just devils and dust
We're a long, long way from home, Bobbie
Home's a long, long way from us
I feel a dirty wind blowing
Devils and dust

I got God on my side
I'm just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear's a powerful thing
It can turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God filled soul
And fill it with devils and dust"

I may not share his views but Immortal Technique has brought political rap to a modern mainstream (By mainstream, I mean Youtube/net users unlike a lot of political rappers who are unknown outside their own area). I respect him for his music and his desire.

+1 to Springsteen, Dylan

-1 to Oberst. That "President Talks to God" song was really cute and all, but I think he's better at writing his more poppy material. This has been reinforced with his recent non-Bright Eyes stuff.

Anyway, my top political lyricist is probably Peter Tosh.

Dylan Isn't cliche whatsoever in those political songs. and he's unequalled. his imitator Phil Ochs was a bit cliche, but also pretty cutting.

I'm not even going to bold the irony in this post. But it makes me lol.

On topic, Maynard James Keenan gets political sometimes.

Daves not that great of a lyricist imo. They get the point across, but theyre arent all that imaginative or special. Just kinda blah to me. Lucky for him though, I dont listen to megadeth for the lyrics.
