Ive been designing a paint job for my strat for a few weeks now, and now i have it down perfectly. Its inspired by jimi hendrix's v, monterey and saville strat and psychedelic artwork in general. I was wondering if some good acrylic paint or some paint markers would stay on the guitar if i do it right over the clear coat? I want to go this route because i dont want the entire guitar finished.

So would paint markers or acrylic paint stick on the guitar?

Wow, You're in like the exact same situation I am. I've been wanting to paint my strat for a while now. I do know that paint won't stick that well if it's on a smooth surface. However, I believe the paint pens work, but I really don't know. Let me know if you find an answer!

I'm quite sure that you should sand back where you want your paint so it sticks
and from experience, never use acrylics with a brush where you can help it, brush-strokes look crap.
Also, don't use road-marking paint.

yes, paint markers will work. I would do a few clearcoats over it, though, as it will chip off fairly quickly if you don't. Mine is chipping off.

im using alcyd paint but you cant put a acryl finish over it so you need to be carefull with that.
it looks good though, and sticks on it well too untill now :P
here's how it looks after 2 layers black and 3 layers white alcyd paint:

it looks good to me only need to put a finish on it and im done

You can get marker off with 90% rubbing alcohol. It evaporates quickly so it won't ruin the finish too quick. Just get it on, rub off the marker, and then wipe it off in under 30 seconds and you'll be fine.
