i recently returned a ts9 because it basically sounded like shiz running through the xxx. i want to know, is there any type of boost/od/distortion/anything that will work well with the xxx?
any suggestions would be appreciated

^only do that if you plan on modding it to original specs.

I personally would look at and OCD

Man you want to push a Triple XXX? They ooze with gain on their own haha.

Check out the Maxon OD808. It's a Tubescreamer clone, but it has the older chips that Ibby used so they sound much better.

I say you should go out and try a Z-Vex Super Hard-On.

I don't really see the point of boosting a XXX for rhythm riffing.
Try playng with the effects loop on, and turn the send and return dials up to 8-9 if you want more volume and punch from the amp.

on the effects loop note, is it better to run a reverb in it or up front?

It depends on the pedal and amp. Sometimes they sound better up front and other times in the loop.
Personally, I would put it through the loop cause I like to not have too many things in front of the preamp.
