...Um...wow. Please tell me you were joking, but OS is the operating system. Windows XP, Vista, Mac OS X, Ubuntu Linux, so on so forth.

just reinstall the system if your in over your head

I think I may have to, it stays on for like 30 seconds.
#10
the easiest think to do is find a windows xp install disk and boot from that. (remember to change the boot sequence in the BIOS first) then do a fresh install. theres other solutions but much too complicated if you dont know what an OS is, lol.

that could be a bigger problem if it doesnt even get to the welcome screen of xp. if it was an OS issue then it would tell you in the boot sequence or would hang somewhere in windows. you may need to open it up and remove the CMOS battery to reset BIOS and DOS defaults.

wait! have u tried starting up in safe mode? this happened to me before, and i removed the virus in safe mode, coz safe mode stops even the virus from starting up, but still lets u run a scan

very true. you usually press F5 or F8 in the boot up sequence and choose safe mode. it only loads the very basics

Why not enter a windows disk, and try to restore the system to a restore point?
Worked for a friend of mine , didnt take too long either

if this is a second hand pc the hard drive really should have a clean formatting into NTSC format (not FAT 32) and a fresh install of XP so you dont have all the little left overs from the past owner.

are you manually trying to delete the file or using a anti virus application? if so what anti virus program and whats the files name because if its a infected system file you can only heal it or your screwed

If you have internet at the moment you can download Unlocker, its a program that gives you permission to delete anything you want.
But i dont know if its possible to download let alone install stuff when in safe mode.

They say this would work, but i doubt you can pull it off in 30 seconds
Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open. Close all open programs. Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe. Leave Task Manager open. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in. At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename> is the file you wish to delete. Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell. Close Task Manager.

if you had access to another computor and a USB flash drive, you could download unlocker or whatever its called.

personally i had a sort of same problem

i downloaded:
Malwarebytes anti-malware
Spybot: Search and destroy
Super anti-spyware (i think)

and another great free program is COMODO's Internet security, but don't use it til you've done the rest

I think it's the MS Blaster Worm.

Edit: like will you be sitting there and all of a sudden a countdown timer pops up and says it's gonna restart your comp?
