I play:
Post Rock
Metal (Metallica to Tool to In Flames and Bodom)
Classic Rock (Pink Floyd)

I will be upgrading guitars also and pickups but I know these are more for fine tuning one's tone.

I'm looking for an amp preferably a head + cab. My only problems are I won't be gigging (maybe if I can find a band) so I'll be playing in my townhouse (parents) or college dorm. If I buy a 100 watt mesa head can I use an attenuator to get it quiet and still have great tone?

Do you guys recommend combos or stacks for what I need?
Also recommend some cabs in different sizes. Are avatar cabs any good?

No no no, you don't want deziel for classic rock and old school thrash (kind of)

I reccomend a Mesa MarkV if you have a "high amount of funds" Also maybe a Marshall JVM, Splawn Nitro or Mesa Recifier (You probaly don't want a recto)

holy god, you gear ***** (jk)

i would say get a really nice combo for practice in the dorm

mesa has an express line out now, supposedly good and fairly cheap, so maybe one of those for bedroom practice, and a stack for other applications?

Randall MTS with a Mesa 2x12.

Blackface, Top Boost, SL+ and Grail modules.

Dial your tones in at a loud volume, then you can turn the volume down when you need to. I do and I get bedroom levels that sound just fine.
Then there's this band called Slice The Cake...

Bunch of faggots putting random riffs together and calling it "progressive" deathcore.
Stupid name.

yea i know my gear sucks but I figured the best and most lasting option would be an amp.
so what are these really nice combos?
Could someone answer my question about attenuators.
I used to have a peavy valveking 212 and i couldn't turn it louder than 3-4 on the clean channel so I need great tone but volume where my neighbors don't bang on my wall.

You don't need an attenuator with the RM100. Hell, you could get an RM50 if you wanted (it's lighter, not much quieter at all, you only get 2 channels, and you can't combine different power amp tubes, but it's still an amazing amp). Get it in a combo if you want for two channels of sexy tone

But which of those are at the low ends of budget? I might wanna buy some nice pedals. AXE FX Anyone :P

Yeah, he listed the 3 good Line6 amps, but if you want a modeler and great tone, the MTS is where you should look. I would also recommend the 5150 III, Mesa Mark V, Splawn, and H&K though. Try them out if at all possible.

Trying them out is gonna be pretty impossible unless I go to a big city (NYC/Philly/etc.) I live in Central PA and still have to figure out where I wanna go to college :P

I'm not really into modellers as I have one now (VOX AD15VT) so i want the real thing.
How are the hiwatt amps and orange amps?

I know that Eddie Vedder uses a Hiwatt. If that gives you an idea of how they sound.

No just no.
that is not what a attenuator is intended for. Its intended to be used like this:
1. Bring Amp up to Sweetspot where you get a nice Saturated sound.
2. Bring it down to gig-able volume.
3. Enjoy your tone.

Its not intended to dime the amp and than play it at bedroom volume.
I say get a Mesa Mark V and a nice cab. The Mark V can be brought down to 10 watt which is much more reasonable for bedroom playing than dimming a 100 watt amp and bring it down to bedroom volume with a attenuator. Also it is one of the most versitality amps out there.

How are the hiwatt amps and orange amps?

David Gilmour uses Hiwatt amps. But the MTS pretty much IS the real thing. IT uses all analog circuitry to replicate (very closely) the preamps of various amps from Fender, Vox, Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Soldano, etc. Basically, you decide which amps have the tones you like and you can get them in an MTS module. There's also a few guys who can get the modules even closer (if not identical) to the specs of the preamps you want to imitate for a price (between $100-250 usually). And if you don't like the tone of one of the channels, it's $200 to replace instead of either having to deal with it's sound or spending $1000+ on a new amp.

David Gilmour uses Hiwatt amps, but they're obscenely expensive. As for the amps at the lower end of your budget, OP, the Line 6 Flextone III can be found for <$500, Mark IIIs are around $1000 used (same with the IV) the JCM800 and 900 are $800-ish, Peavey's 3120 is $1000 new, and most of the Buddas can be found for <$2000.

I think im gonna have to see tryout this MTS, I'm really interested in these power amps, and Ill deff check out the JCMs and the Mark IVs. Still how are oranges, I want one just for the sake of having one also a twin reverb/princeton reverb. How are they?
#31
What do you mean by trying out power amps? I only mentioned the power amp TUBES and how they can be mixed in the MTS. You can use anything from 6L6s to KT88's and mix them as well. But the real appeal of the series is the modular preamps.

Since you have such a large budget though, you might be able to spend a couple of hundred dollars on tubes to try out different combinations of pre and power amp tubes. Just do some research on them so you know what you're doing

From what you've said, there is absolutely no reason for a stack. The Mark V will be coming in a 1x12 combo, but at least it has a 10W and 45W mode so even if you do get a stack that might work. Rectifier combo's are good too.
