So, I'm taking my GIO Series Ibanez RG, and turning it into a Frankenstrat RG. I've started taking the body apart, I just have to find my soldering iron and sander to finish it, as well as buy red and white paint, painter's tape, and possibly a few other things. I'm also replacing the Powersound 1 bridge pickup with a 1990s BC Rich BDSM humbucker with coil tap, refinishing the headstock in a Frankenstrat fashion with a Kramer decal, and replacing the neck plate with a 5150 Kramer plate.

My questions to you, before I begin, are:

What kind of paint should I use? Preferably spray paint.
How do I remove those annoying metal rings on the headstock where the tuners used to be?

I'll have pictures as soon as FaceBook mobile stops acting up.

THE GUITAR:

The body by itself, after I removed the neck

The neck

The headstock

The BC Rich BDSM Pickup, pots, and mini-toggle

The body after the tremolo, tremolo springs, strap buttons, and basically everything but the jack and pickguard was removed

Regular old spray paint from wal-mart will work.
Sand them off maybe? or paint over them.

How exactly am I supposed to sand off big metal doughnut shaped things that are attached to the headstock?
And as for what kind, I meant brand. I know some brands work better than others.

That sounds like it would definitely work XD

Removed the tuners (earlier, didn't put pic on FBM) and took out the little knob thingys.

Good, I never understood people who take it out just because EVH didn't have one.

What about the tone knob?

This is one frankentstrat project that genuinely interests me for two reasons.
1) You are keeping h-h pickup configuration, as well as adding coil taps.

2) I usually don't understand why people want to have somebody else's brand on their custom built guitars but I find a Kramer logo on a Ibanez lulz worthy.

1) Hell yeah. Just because I love Van Halen doesn't mean I should sacrifice versatility.

2) Because I don't want that gay Ibanez GIO logo on there anymore, and I'm refinishing the headstock anyway.

Found my god damned soldering iron, took out all the wiring. I'm gonna sand it down tomorrow, maybe. Painting's gonna wait, we just had a blizzard today >_<

The low has to be 45 before we can paint.

You intend to paint in 45F?

Your insane.

That is 7C. You shouldn't paint in less than 65-70F
#23
*shrug*

I said the low.
Here the low is usually a good 25 degrees lower than the high.

Update:

Found my detail sander, so I'm gonna sand down part of the body to make a nice contour on the lower horn, for increased fret access. Looking for my other sander now.

Of course

I'm just planning to shave away part of the lower horn on the back to get easier access to the neck. I ran out of sanding pads for my sander (I had one XD), so it's not finished.

And the neck joint? Is it contoured like some of the higher-end RG's, or is it like a Fender neck joint, and if the latter, are you planning to contour it?

New Pics? Or is this build on hiatus?

It was too cold to paint.
Just finished the first coat of primer. Waiting an hour, sanding the one sag in the paint I had, and then applying another coat. Pics should be up around 9:30 central.

EDIT:
You've caught me. I am a liar.
I will post pics in the morning when I apply the next coat then.
