I agree on this, it's an EXCELLENT set.

However, personally, I'm switching out of the Jazz for a Pearly Gates in the neck on my current project guitar. Just liked the tone a bit better.

But the Jazz/JB set is excellent.

A pair of decent PAF-types with Alnico V magnets.

The JB really isn't all that special.
Actually called Mark!

I REALLY don't like the JB (in Les Pauls, anyway).

EDIT: Gah, beaten again.

For versatility, I actually like P90s best. They do cleans, they do crunch and they somewhat do lead. I figure the Duncan P-Rails is worth a look if you're into versatility.

2ndEDIT: Didn't read the part about Metallica. Eh, P90s are probably not the best solution for that. I figure a HSH guitar would do the trick for the styles that were mentioned. Don't underestimate the middle single coil, I think it does a brilliant AC/DC-esque tone if you dial in your amp the right way.

Also a versatile amp is needed. You can screw your expensive pickups, if you have a ****ty amp.
Fender MIA Stratocaster (with SD Twang Banger)
Epiphone Les Paul Special II
Johnson Acoustic
Palmer FAB5

EMG 81/60 for metal seeing as everyone will eventually play metal at one point.

What a terrible statement.

JB/Jazz or JB/'59

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.
