who are some good self-taught guitarists? i need some confidence. it seems to me that all of my guitar idols started playing guitar, piano or violin when they were like 3 and went to school for music when they got older... while i started playing at 17 (19 now)

Just what I was going to say! If Marty Friedman isn't a boost for your confidence
He never even believed in learning all those different scales, just came up with his own

I think Kirk Hammett for a little bit then he took lessons from Joe Saratini

So was Santana.

I'm self taught 2 and a half years, with the help only of some youtube videos. I'm learning sweep picking at the moment, I got most guitar techniques dominated.

Just practice alot, atleast 1 hour a day.

that's great. the rest mentioned in this thread are obviously good (LOVE megadeth/mustaine), but when i said "guitar idols" i meant people like paul gilbert, satch, syu, takayoshi ohmura

Jimi Hendrix, Marty Friedman, Paul Allender, me...it's perfectly possible to teach yourself to play guitar and still be as good as anyone who takes lessons, the only difference is they'll possibly know better theory than you but you can teach yourself that too

EVH was. He didn't have a single guitar lesson, apperently the only lesson he ever had was a friend shown him some chords.

Eric Clapton is self taught and seems to knows his way around a stratocaster.
I don't always post in the threads but when I do its random and pointless because I'm ignorant enough to think you care.

Zacky Vengeance.

And no, I'm not raising a flamesheild, becasue I don't care. I like his playing.

I've been taking lessons for nine months, so I can't say myself anymore.

And I still know so little about the guitar and I'm so bad at playing that refering to myself as a guitarist would be morally wrong.
