Well, against what my buddy said, i bought a randall solid state head. and it really was ****. it was acting up so i opened it up to check for lose wires, and the manufactuers had wires hot glued, and electric taped. i disown randall for that one. so now im looking for a tube head. forget solid state. so i was thinking of the peavey heads. i was thinking of the valveking 100, because its only $575. but then im looking at the peavey 6505 plus for $1200. or maybe the triple xxx for $1300. i played the triple x and liked it. how does it stack up to the valveking and 6505 plus? which one is best for a guitarist playing hard rock and metal?

and lastly, if you cant reccommend any of those, reccommend me a tube head. my budget will be in the $1000 range, no more than $1300

Do you need cleans? If yes, XXX. If no, 6505.

Both amps are great - the XXX is a fair bit brighter and has nicer cleans than the 'brutal' and dark 6505. While the cleans on the 6505 aren't great by anyone's standards, I'd say they're usable - especially on a 6505+

All depends what tones you want really - whichever amp you get is not going to give you a BAD tone, just different.

you arent planning to use the metal zone with any of these heads are you? my vote goes to the 3120 if you play thrash, rock, and shred, but to the 6505+ if you play hardcore

yeah they changed the eqs a bit, to where the 3120 is not as responsive i guess so it is easier to plug and play
and if it sounded brighter than damn. that sucks, the xxx is bright enough

the 3120 is much easier to set than the xxx. i found that the xxx is quite sensitive, and if you take enough time, then you can get the tone you are looking for. the 3120, while the exact same amp, has slightly different eqs. they are much less responsive. i have demoed it extensively at the local guitar center, just to make sure it was the same as the xxx.

the 6505 plus has better cleans than the normal 6505, and lacks that special 5150ness
and if you buy used, you can buy a bunch of other cool sh*t

you could almost buy a fireball with your budget, but if you want peavey you can't go wrong with the 6505 or the xxx. The 6505 has ALOT of bottom end and is great for dropped tuning. The xxx has more treble but still pretty good

craigslist, musicgoround, used stuff at local stores (whether it be guitar center or small shops) would be your best bets. it shouldnt be that hard to find a 6505 or XXX used, they pop up all the time
