Next week im getting a LP jr and ill update this thread with pics and such along the way but heres what im planning on doing to it, and ive found all the parts for it so it should end up pretty sick (imo)

LP Jr in ebony finish - $130
White pick guard - $20
white EMG 89 - $120
white pickup ring - $2.50
Intonatable wraparound bridge - $18
Grover tuners -
white speed knobs - $2.50
Tusq nut - $11
Heavy Guage elixrs - $11

anybody got anything i should add to this? or comments on what you think of it? All this is going to cost about $350 so its a pretty inexpensive way to get a nice looking, most likely nice playing guitar.

i knew there would be EMG haters :P but i play metalcore and i like the output and tone i get from an 81 so its all personal preference really lol. and plus i REALLY want the pup to be white and thats the only one i can find thats worth getting thats white.

Have you looked into the Bareknuckles? They seem to be quite popular and you wouldn't have to add in the battery cavity.

i'm not really a hater, just not a big fan. and you can get some others in white, like dimarzios and such, but hey, if you like them, go for it

LP Jr in ebony finish
White pick guard
white EMG 81
white pickup ring
black roller tune-o-matic bridge and im going to drill out some holes and get some ferrules to do string thru body instead of using a tailpiece.
some grover tuners
white speed knobs

anybody got anything i should add to this? or comments on what you think of it? All this is going to cost about $340 so its a pretty inexpensive way to get a nice looking, most likely nice playing guitar.
You're focused on the wrong places to start.

1 - The nut on a LPjr is total crap. Why the hell are you dumping all that cash into this and keeping that piece of garbage? It's the weakest point of the guitar when it's stock and you haven't address it at all. That should be one of the FIRST things you go after. New tuners and a roller bridge won't do squat to help your tuning when the strings hang up on that soft plastic bridge. And a decent nut won't cost much more than your silly friggin white knobs that won't make a rat-ass worth of difference to sound OR playability.

2 - Roller bridge? WHY? You don't have a vibrato, so that's unnecessary. And the wraparound bridge is great. Want adjustable saddles? Fine. Get a Quan or a look-alike. Use the same posts instead of doweling and drilling for the small tuno posts.

3 - You haven't mentioned anything about fret level / crowning / polishing. The fretwork on a LPjr is mediocre at best. A little attention here goes much farther in the playability than pickup tuners and bridge. Why neglect the inexpensive but IMPORTANT stuff?

Throw all the money you want at this, but it will still be a dog if you don't handle the important things.

And remember, this will ALWAYS be a one-trick-pony with just one pickup at the bridge.

whoa thanks for that man! im currently playing a borrowed LP jr and i really like everything about the way it plays. especially the frets so i dont see a problem there but maybe im playing one that got lucky to have good frets on it. OH and the bridge im getting has the large posts so it would just be a pop out pop in thing, no filling in and drilling out. Also the reason im getting a roller bridge is simply because ive found one with the large posts (i cant find any non-roller ones with large posts that arent too expensive for my budget) and its cheaper than any of the other TOM's that arent roller. its not gonna hurt anything for it to be roller just cause i dont have a vibrato. Plus i will be less likely to break strings at the bridge (not that i think thats gonna happen anyway). I will look into getting a new nut for it, thanks for pointing that out. Also i HATE the wraparound bridge on the jr. its completely unintonateable. and i cant stand that at all, thats why im getting a TOM. Also the one trick pony comment, im quite aware of that. Like i said i play metalcore (pretty much just hardcore) so a neck pickup would be all but useless for me.

Thank you very much for your input though! that was the most constructive post so far.

Edit: i found a Tusq nut that will work, would that be a wise choice?

lemme get this straight... yr buying the guitar and before you even own it yr already planning on making all sorts of changes to it? i can think of much more stuff to do with $340 than jumping the gun and making changes to an instrument i dont even own yet.

get the guitar, get a good setup done on it, play it for awhile and make sure you are comfortable with it (yeah i know you already have been playing a borrowed one - doesnt make a lick of difference here) and then - and only then - can you decide what you need to do with it to make it better and white pickguards and whatnot are nice and all but dont mean shiat in the long run if you dont like playing the damn thing.

Not exactly true. There are grub screws on the back of the bridge to set the intonation. You have to compromise a bit, but you can get close. If one string is a bit out compared to the rest, you can change it's gauge relative to the other strings.

Because the strings terminate on the bridge itself, the wraparound bridge has the best sustain of any i've used. If you want adjustability, here's another way to go:

Regarding the pickup. Instead of an 81, consider getting an 81-tw. $15 more and you add another sound to your palette.

haha yeah youve got it pretty much. i realize it seems like im jumping into things here but really im not too picky about things, as long as it makes sound and its got a pickup in it that will give me some good tone and output and it stays in tune, ill pretty much enjoy playing it. I know you probably think im an idiot for this but really, im just not that picky about stuff. Also all the comments on the white pickguard and speed knobs and such, whats wrong with me wanting it to look nice too? Im fixing all the noteable problems with a jr. The bridge, the pickup, the tuners and thanks to SomeoneYouKnew im fixing the nut. then i still have some money left, so im going to make it look nice as well.

Yeah i exaggerated when i said the wraparound was completely unintonateable. ive adjusted it on the one im borrowing as far as it will go and it still isnt correct. On the subject of that quan bridge...its just too expensive, the roller TOM i found is about $17 and that ones is like 75...

ive never heard of the 81-tw but ill check it out, also thanks for the help about the nut, ill most likely get the tusq one

EDIT: updated the first post, im gonna get the 81-tw, thanks SYK

Just bought a TUSQ nut from ebay for $7 and $3 for shipping:

EDIT: im really blind because i wanted an adjustable wraparound but couldnt find one, and on the page for the roller TOM bridge theres a "related products" link to an adjustable wraparound for $1 more than the roller TOM......im getting it.

Ok so now im getting Sta-tite tuners, a wraparound bridge, a tusq nut, and 81-tw's, any other suggestions/changes? and as in the previous post...what kind of glue should be used to put the nut in place?
#16
shameless triple post.

i just went to EMG's website and listened to some clips of the 81-tw and the 89 and i actually like both the 89's clean and dirty sounds better, so im gonna get the 89 instead. and i still have no answer about what glue to use on the nut

also im getting gotoh shaller style tuners instead of the weird ass sta-tites.

any glue - you don't even need glue for the nut the strings will hold it in place just fine, but its always a good idea to put some sort of glue in but not to much so you can't take it out again...
#18
thank you good sir. i order the guitar and parts in 2 days so ill have pics in the next couple of weeks.

Update: got the guitar, pickup and strings. I should have everything else but the tuners and pickguard later today, if not then tomorow or monday. All ive done so far is put my straplocks on it and restrung it. The frets DO need work so any advice/tips/pointers/tutorials etc on that would be nice. i have pics of the frets so just look below:

Pics without strings so you can see the frets:

and look at the like..19-22 frets...theyre so ****ty. and theres a small chip of wood missing from the very end of the side of the fretboard (not bothering me much)

straplocks on:

and thats all for now, but i might get all the other parts later today and ill re-update.

#24
no parts today ill have to wait till probably monday. tuesday at the latest. but ill have the pickup installed sunday so updates are for sure on monday.
#25
EMG is in! sounds spectacular. but damn that control cavity is PACKED.

all the other parts except the pickguard and machine heads come in tomorow. i REALLY need some new machine heads cause these stock ones suck. they feel like theyre full of peanut butter at times and at others they feel like there arent even any gears in there at all.
#26
Non matching shoes? Also I have a bad feeling about the white knobs, as in, I think they will look like ****. Your call though
#28
Destroy that pup ring. If you want a ring on there, get a chrome one or something. That one looks horrible

I'm still undecided on the knob colors. I think the white will look nice once they match the pickguard, but I'm not totally sure.

well, at least i'm not the only one who thought it looked twisted...
#40
haha its just the picture, theres no twist. you guys scared the **** outta me lol...i looked at it tho and its straight. and yeah at the time of picture it had alot of greasy finger print smudges everywhere.

and yeah you see ernie balls. i got elixr's originally and i cut the strings pretty short not thinking. and then with this new bridge the strings were actually too short somehow, so i went to best buy and found ernie balls but theyre light guage so i used the low string as string #2, etc... the only elixr left on it is the low string.
