been lurking around here for some time reading up, but finally decided to join

I'm in the market for my first head as up until now all I have ever played on is an old Vox combo.

I'm pretty set on a $650 budget but always open to "just 100 dollars more gets you this"

I mainly play metal type stuff but would like something versatile that I can expand with. Would like to stay away from Line 6/anything solid state.

heres some examples of music I like to play and the ideally the sound I want to achieve

hard to describe in my own words as I only have a few months of guitar under my belt, but I like the clean crunch sound, especially in the first video

open to ideas, throw them at me

first post ftmfw

thanks

If all you had to go on was the forum you'd think a Decimator could cure noise caused by dodgey stage lighting and restock the ocean's population of sperm whales

if you can't buy used then look at a
Peavey Vypyr
Peavey Vypyr Tube (hybrid)

I'd still say Randall above all, but I don't like Peaveys.

IMO the XXX can't do Brootal nearly as well as the 5150 can. Get that.

any other opinions?

Used Peavey Ultra Plus, just throwing that on top of what has been suggested. At $650, it's tough to find a versatile all tube head.

What major city are you near? Have you checked your local craigslist?
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

look into bugera too, generally good amps for the price just so long as you can get a warranty to avoid reliability issues

oh and the line 6..

flextone. that's acutally a really good amp, its just spiders that suck.
Ibanez S320 with Dimarzio Fred + Seymour Duncan 59-> Weeping Demon Wah -> Ibanez TS-7 -> Homemade iBoost x3 -> Keeley DS-1 -> Visual Sound H2O -> MXR Ten Band -> Traynor YCV20

craigslist scares me but I'll look around.

Why? You can try stuff before you buy? I've bought two great amps off clist and saved huge coin.
OK - I know you said HEAD. Didn't see anything stellar in SFO clist. This did stand out for what you want though. I'm sorry - it is a combo. But you know you can hook combo's up to cabinets, fwiw.
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/1093749710.html 5150 combo, $575. But it's a brootalz machine.
Oh - here's your cab then. Not horrible for $100.00

Also, this Mesa looked good. Others may be able to comment on the single rectifier.

At that budget, new, there really aren't many great options for you. A used JCM800 may hit in your budget but even that may not have the kind of gain you are after. Usually it would take about $700-$800 for a decent metal head with nice cleans, but exceptions are out there. Still, you would need a cab to run it so it's a bit out of reach.

Not trying to piss you off by recommending combo's. Like I said, your clist is kinda sparse.
