hi ug

i recently signed up for this contest called the battle of the bands. You get to play for 35 mins in front of 350 that are mostly my age. the competition are just 2 bands that are like wannabe mainstreamers and don't know what rock and roll is all about. for some reason i am really pissed last year that one of those bands won last year and i pretty much now want to own them in front of like 350 people. yea i was wondering if you guys could paste a cool finger tapping lick or something to show them i mean business and intimidate them because these guys can barely play 8th notes while walking in a straight line. i mean these guys are like a bunch of preps that make fall out boy look good and the people at this town are like missing out on great music because they actually think they are good. so yea some cool licks to make them wet there pants would be nice. i know it doesn't sound right but i just really don't like mainstream bands and neither do i want to loose to a band like that. i mean like imagine fall out boy beating metallica or something.

Cool story

So they are want to be mainstreamers, but your the one asking the pit for what licks you should play?
a little lost.....
#4
Wait, so your band is so great and you are such a great guitarist, but you can't make up your own little tapping sequence?

My band won a battle of the bands once, it was nice. Didn't have to show off either.

Cool story bro

But people like melodies, not guitar wankery.

I wish you obsessive metal heads would learn that.

Awwww, is baby pissed off that people don't like the same music he does?

A "cool tapping solo" is not going to win a BoTB. EVER. It's about the band, the music, the show. Ever thought that the other two bands are good, and that's the reason people like them?
#10
ok yea i guess im just acting a little paranoid but i really just want to blow them out as much as i can. like our band is pretty awesome but i guess im like over paranoid. srry lols

Really. Focus on a good PIECE OF MUSIC, not how fast you can shred or tap (though I like to do it, too...) Make them poo themselves from good songwriting abilities!

As has been said, shredding =/= good music. It's cool as hell when done right, yeah, but it doesn't mean it's good music.
Either way, good luck. Just please, focus on good writing, and not techniques your whole playing career.

no matter how much you show how "good" you are, ****ty bands will always win. i was in one, our guitarist was the absolute best guitarist ive ever played with (taps, sweeps, combos of both, pinch harmonics and dive bombs and squeals up the ass), and we didnt get anywhere with it. battle of the bands is for all commercialized music. record companies wont even lsiten to a band if its not somethign that can sell instantly, which is basically all this emo garbage. so unless you and your band decide to go and sell out, you really dont have a chance to win. sorry but its the truth.

It's not going to work in this circumstance. If you really want to win, get a band together and write an amazing chorus, fill it out with a couple of verses and add a pop punk drum beat.

Do that 7 times and you might stand a chance.

Metal is never going to win anything. Ever. It's far too underground and the people that go to these things are expecting a show, not some wanker playing his guitar.

That's not true. We played in a battle of the bands in February at my university- there was a good mix of genres- electronica, prog, pop punk, hardcore, stoner rock, and alt rock (us), and the stoner rock band won- not the most marketable band of the lot, may I add.

I don't know what you expected to get here considering you're such a cocky self obsessed git. If you and your band are so good, then do what I did in my first gig and...shock horror...play well!!!!

I was in a BoTB earlier today. The token punk band pulled out at the last minute, so there was me on my acoustic guitar, an Oasis/Stone Roses cross and the most amazing Electronica band I've ever heard.

So, not THAT commercialised

It's a battle of the bands, not a battle of guitar wankery, so choose a song that not only shows off your band's talent as a whole, but also appeals to the audience.

If you're still set on playing metal, try something off of Guitar Hero, people love that.

Also, Band leading forum will probably be of more help than The Pit

The electronica band we played against were awesome as well... I have no idez how we came higher (hell, I have no idea why we came second, lol).

Electronica is awesome. It's something I've wanted to dabble in since listening to PFI.

It's something I find myself writing in the style of these days.

I lack the equipment, so I usually just distort a drum machine and play my MicroKorg to make the song

As a genre, I think it's one of the very few that hasn't had all of its originalaity drained. I think that's why I'm attracted towards it.

Did you guys get a prize for coming in second?

my metal band played the battle of the bands at the end of last year........ tied for first in the first round.....then in the grand final....we played...the crowd went mental and we got encored

and then we came third.......

some band that was just two guys with a guitar and a drum machine came second

and the band that came first was the one that we tied with...that im actually mates with....are pop rock....

one of my mates went and spoke to the judges and they said they wanted something ''that would make money fast''

nice.....

haha im not really complaining if it sems like it....just telling a little story...

and kid you sound like an idiot, playing tapping isnt going to win..maybe write a good song?

Nah, no prize, but it was a great experience- and I was personally lauded by the judges when they were making comments- one of only two musicians of the 6 bands to actually be mentioned- for my musicianship and creativity Plus the fact that one of the judges is a worldwide session bassist, I found that better than any prize.

Metallica are mainstream as fuck.

Also, that 'bunch of preps' probably won because they played a good show and had good stage presence. I'd rather see a generic rock band playing OK songs and having a brilliant time and getting the crowd involved, than some kid shredding the shit out of a guitar at a million notes per second and standing stock still.

RIP Dime.

But seriously, learn2music. People at Battle of the Bands don't want to hear your boring guitar wankery. Just write a good song, doesn't have to be teh br00talz metal shred, just catchy and fun. This is more likely to win over an audience than tapping licks.
