You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

I looked on musicians friend, they only have a strat version. That's a relief, I don't want to see a tele desecrated by Hello Kitty.

There isn't a "best guitar" out there: it all depends on what style of music you play and what you want to be able to do with your guitar.

As for you playing Rock, just Rock in general or do you have a specific sub-genre that you like? What are some songs that you play? What bands do you want to sound similar to?

You need to be a lot more specific. The Beatles? AC/DC? Aerosmith? The New Pornographers?

...

Nirvana?

Oh and there is no "Best Guitar" It just depends on your taste at the time you buy it. You can change your sound.

I think an HSS strat is exactly what you need.

Nah I've already got a stat style guitar.

Try everything you can within your budget.
Then it's a matter of what sounds the best to your ears, and feels best in your hands.
Play your guitar as much as you can.
Then play some more.

Jackson and Ibanez both offer several excellent models in that price range. That is, models that actually stay in tune, have perfect intonation, and have decent stock hardware on them. I would avoid Fender, B.C. Rich, Epiphone....I have had some bad experiences with all but B.C. Rich (but a friend of mine suffered greatly with one).

Well a strat is really what you're looking for. RHCP, Green Day, and Nirvana have all used strats.

I would check out some Paul Reed Smith guitars if I were you. They play like guitars worth $1000
