I noticed the appalling lack of a thread on this mindblowing live act, so here it is.

(I did see the sticky about no band threads here, but I figure this is a special case as it's a tribute act and in any case the music spans nearly all of the genres above and so wouldn't fit into any of them, including 'other')

Anyway, Zappa Plays Zappa is an act dedicated to the difficult task of playing the music of the late composer Frank Zappa, led by his son Dweezil. They've been touring the world for a number of years now, and let me tell you, you will not witness a tighter or more entertaining display of musicianship unless Frank himself is resurrected.

The band has featured several Zappa alumni in its lineups including legendary guitarist Steve Vai, which I think might pique the interest of many on this forum.

Here is a selection of videos taken from the DVD, many featuring Vai.

Peaches en Regalia

Inca Roads

Zomby Woof

Oh No, Son of Orange County & Trouble Every Day

The amazing Steve and Dweezil jam that ensues (watch this if you're only interested in guitar pwnage)

I'm the Slime

The Black Page #1 & 2 (watch this for general n00b destroying musicianship)

And a preview of the new upcoming DVD:

Wow, this was much better than I expected. I was skeptical of Zappa plays Zappa for the longest time simply because it wasn't Frank, but I'm incredibly impressed. Really, the only thing I can complain about is that Dweezil doesn't exactly appear to have his father's sense of humor.

Saw them front row at bonnaroo, the most spectacular thing I've seen live ever.
Oct. 20th, 2009: New guitar AND front row for Mars Volta.

Is that a ukulele in your pants, or did you just rip ass to the tune of "Aloha Oi"?

I met Sonic Youth on June 30th, and Mars Volta on Oct 20th.

meh, looks like the folks around here wouldn't know good music if it came up and bit them in the ass, as Frank would say :P

I caught Zappa Plays Zappa at Rothbury. It was probably the best live show I've ever seen. Dweezil is a phenominal guitarist. His band is very tight. They did Flakes and rolled it right into Broken Hearts Are For Assholes - just like it's supposed to be. Ray White shared the stage for a large portion of the show too. The DVD is killer, but it's missing Nanook Rubs It!

I have seen Zappa plays Zappa 2 times now, and everytime I go they just get tighter and better as a group. I can not believe how much better Dwezil's playing has gotten by learning Franks music. Very inspiring to watch.

On the first tour i saw it was with Vai and Bozzio. What a duo to have on stage at the same time. Dwezil held is own to, even with Steve on the stage.

2nd tour had Brock on vocals. Amazing!! Great to hear on cd, Awesome to see live. He had so much energy.

They have been 2 of my fav concerts ever and I am a metal head. My dad took me both times. pretty much the only music we can agree on.

Thanks dad for making me realize how much talent Frank really had.
