Just started following this build, looks awesome so far! I gotta admit, I wasn't big on the body design at first but now i'm seriously diggin it! Oh, and if you haven't already decided on it yet, I vote for side one of the inlays...cheers!

Thanks man!

I've decided to mix and match the inlay sides... there are some inlays that look better on side 1 and some that look better on side 2, so I will figure out the best combination.

hey, havent been on this thred for a while, the guitar is looking awsom! Love the inlays, i think they are gona look awsom with the dark wood on the neck. I was wondering if your still gona do the racing stripe or u gona leave it as the wood?

Oh and when you do get it up and playing you have to record a sound clip, or a you tube vid of u playin it!

I am not going to go with the stripe for this build, but I probably will for a later one

And I will absolutely get a video up. My skills aren't quite what they should be for a proper display of this guitar, so you're forewarned!

Negative-progress update

Went to my uncle's to do the scarf joint. Made a jig. Cut the joint. It wasn't straight. Fixed the jig. Cut the joint again. Wasn't straight. (by straight I mean square to the wood) Checked the wood, checked the jig, cut the joint. Wasn't straight.

Washed, rinsed, and repeated until I no longer had enough wood to do a not-cramped headstock.

My uncle feels slightly bad for me because he thought his jig was good. He is possibly going to buy me a nice piece of padauk to try again. If I beat him to the lumber store, I'm getting it.

EFF!!

Make a jig with whatever degrees you want, and then run it on the table saw. Works amazing.

Want me to show you the jig, etc? I can get you some pics tomorrow.

We used his mitre saw. Set it to 15* and then used a 90* jig to get the angle right through geometry.

I'm so pissed right now.

my jig is simple, it hold the board at 7 degrees, or whatever you want (different jig for different angle) then the jig runs flush with the fence on the saw, and holds the board at the right angle. Works great every time.

Alright, here we go. In the pictures with the table saw, its not set up properly, i just wanted you to get the general idea. I would figure out where i want the headstock to start (nut side) and draw a 7 degree line to guide me, if this was a scarf. If you want me to do a tut, i can. I can do up a scarf tomorrow, since i have to cut out some stuff on it anyway.

that cool. and real original too.

you oughtta make a bunch of those things and sell em
#150
^ Why? You would get like 5 bucks for one. They take about 2 minutes to make and anyone could make one easy so there is not point in selling them.

Bobby, what are you cutting a 7 degree angle on?
#151
What do you mean? Like what tool? or what?

That board is a neck thru hard maple blank. Not sure what your asking.

What are you using the 7 degree jig for is what I meant.

Why 7 degrees? Scarfs are usually around 12-15 degrees

15*

And Cam, I think the guy was talking about the design? Not sure though. Maybe that's just my ego speaking

Agreed, that would be more effective, but what made you decide to do headstocks at 7* when the values I see thrown around are typically between 13* and 17*?

That's what he's asking.

I use 7 for one piece necks. It's just my personal preference.
For scarf, i'll use anything really. However, i just made a 15 degree one that will be ready to use tomorrow (glues drying), so tut then.

Did you want me to show you how to actually construct the jig, or do you think if i provide a jpeg of it, you'll be fine?
Just use a miter saw set to 15 to make the two pieces, and then glue 'em up.

Mitre saw at 15* actually cuts at 75* relative to the fence... the 15* is measured from the "vertical" line i.e. the line which is perpendicular to the fence. In my experience at least...

So maybe you need to do a step by step on how to construct it.

alright. Can do tomorrow.

However, set at 15*, it still produces the correct cut for the jig.

Update:

Went to the lumber yard today. Spent $30. Got 4ft. of Sapele and Flamed Maple. Wide enough to do two laminate necks. Long enough to give me tons of fcuk-up room. Going to rip, joint, plane, and glue+clamp when I get back to school.
