What are your thoughts on ambient music?

I recently began appreciating Brian Eno more after gaining a better understanding of his production style with artists like Coldplay (Say what you will), U2, Devo, Talking Heads, and David Bowie.

As I began listening to his style of production I realized that he did work on his own being labeled the 'father of ambient music' and discovered some albums he did that fall under the 'ambient' genre.

Really mindless yet wonderful music. Thoughts?

Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre FTW!

Also, Brian Eno made the Win95 startup sound.

DirtyEdit: Early Kraftwerk (Autobahn comes to mind)
and Vangelis (Blade Runner soundtrack.).

DirtyEdit2:
Last week, I found Zoolook (J-M J; but not ambient, more '80s electronica) in a vinyl record store.

...Gotta love the DX7 ...

Does Explosions in the Sky count?

If so, I love it!

Tangerine Dream is odd I prefer Shpongle for some ambient trance/psychedelic.

i love it. my german teacher in high school gave me an aphex twin CD and brian eno's 'thursday afternoon' to listen to. i never looked back.

thursday afternoon is still my favorite ambient album ever. its also a great album to listen to when youre in an 'altered state of mind'. i had my first ever out of body experience and open eye hallucinations while listening to that album.

Aphex Twin is great and "Thursday Afternoon" is wonderful.

Eno's stuff is really quite solid and I'm surprised that it really took me so long to get into.
Right now I'm enjoying his 'Ambient; series of albums (1-4). Such good stuff.

no, not at all.

i have some ambient on my computer that i sometimes use to fall asleep or get high to. a lot of stuff from Kompakt records, particular their "Pop Ambient" collections. Brian Eno is also amazing.

Meh, not too big on ambient music. Never been impressed with BOC or Aphex Twin.

Bohren & der Club of Gore is basically all I listen to.

Explosions in the Sky is a Post Rock band.

So no, unfortunately, they don't count

I love Boards of Canada, if anybody's heard of them

Can anyone let me know where to get some of Eno's stuff? I can't find it anywhere.

I would give Aphex another chance! It took me a while to really begin enjoying ambient music but I think that it's a genre/style of music that hasn't had enough attention.

Boards of Canada is a flipping awesome band. Some of the most amazing music ever, just so creative.

sorry for the bump,

ive recently got into ambient and have a few albums by eno. 1/1 and 1/2 are really chillaxing after a long stressful day.

Its good research for A level Music Tech, because I'm doing an ambient version of Mr Tamborine Man.
