$100 isn't much. if i were you, i would save up $600-$1000 to get a new amp. you could get a pedal, but there isn't much use in doing that if you don't have an amp that will complement it.

He doesn't really need 600-1000 bucks to get a decent tube amp that he'll enjoy. 400-500 would be plenty enough to get something nice.

well for what i would recommend, he'd need between $1000 and $1400. but there are good tube amps for less money.

what i would recommend is a Randall RM50 combo with the blackface and Ultra XL modules. the latter module is just one of many preamp modules for this amp; you'd have to do some research to find the perfect one. a 1086 modded by Pete Turely is probably the best you can get. here is a link with some great sound clips:
