Because the emg 81/85 it has are active pickups...Active pickups need batteries!

active emg's require batteries to power their pre amp i think. should be something along the lines of that

ahm... the model I found is loaded with EMGs so I would say: yes! The Battery is nesessary for the Pickups.

Lol sorry. This might seem like a stupid question too but what if the battery runs out while you're playing?

It won't make any sound, the battery would last you a good year or 2 so don't worry about it, replace them with brand new batteries before a gig for safety.
