Whats the difference between them? Why do people use electrics over semi-acoustic when you can have an electric and acoustic guitar at the same time? Is the tone different?

hehe. im guessing you've never had one before? a semi acoustic is basically an acoustic guitar that has a pickup just so the acoustic sound can be played louder. it is not essentially able to play like an acoustic and an electric guitar.
Yes, the tone is different.

A semi-acoustic guitar has both a sound box and one or more electric pickups. This is not the same as an electro-acoustic guitar, which is an acoustic guitar with the addition of pickups.

The sound box is used primarily to produce an amplified tone not obtainable with a solid body instrument. They are used a lot for jazz and blues.
