i know laney and marshall both make british voiced amps, but could a laney do marshall tones (say, guns n roses) and could a marshall do laney tones? (sabbath, HIM etc.)

i was wondering which would be the better all round brand for very british voiced stuff?

it wont be for a while yet, but i should eventually get some cash for a new amp, and was wondering whether i should track down a used JCM 600/800/900/2000 or something like a laney AOR50 or VH100H, or maybe a VC combo.

id definately be doing used, can get better stuff for cheaps.

thanks for any input.

If you want the best for british voiced, then it's the laney I'd say. But I agree with the above. When I think British, I think VOX and Hiwatt

hmm Voxs are a bit of a jump out of my price range, to get a 50/200 watt vox for gigs would be one hell of a stretch.

never really looked at hiwatts, i know there about £600 new.

Either amp would do the other's tones pretty damn well, to be honest.
They still have their own definite voices, but there is a pretty large crossover territory where 99% of people wouldn't hear the difference.

And a JCM800 or VH100 will do fine.

I have a JCM800 2210 and it can get some pretty sick thrashy tones. Linde from HIM uses two Laney VH100, one runs all amp distortion, the other runs a fuzz, so you get this sick stereo distortion.

well marshalls only really seem to do the marshall sound, laneys i'd say are a little more versatile, if you shove a distortion pedal in front of a laney and use it just to colour the tone you can get pretty marshally sounds (this is what i do with my LC30). though obviously it wont be the real thing.

hmm, LC30s seem to go pretty cheap used on ebay...could be a potential option.

Only the original Sound City amps. The new range released the other year are a different breed indeed (basically, it's just the name. A far cry from being made by Dallas Arbiter in London!)
