I'm going to check out a used Strat and I was wondering if there is anything in particular to look out for when buying from a private seller.

the pickups there are Joe Barden pickups and from what i've heard from clips and such I like them a lot.

one more thing, how do I know what wood the body is made from? I know now that the black stratocasters have Alder bodies, but this is a 2006 strat.

All modern Strats have alder bodies unless specified otherwise.

Check the bridge, machineheads and pickups for rust.

Check that the neck isn't twisted.

Check that pickups, controls and selector switch all work properly, with no hissing or wobbly signal.

Plug in and play it, in all pickup positions and fiddling with the volume and tone controls; to make sure it all works.

poplar, actually. MIM = poplar, MIA = Alder, generally.

sorry, my bad. The new '09's are Alder. Generally older MIM's'll be poplar, though.
Fact: Bears eat beats. Bears beats Battlestar Galactica.
