Well so do I!!! The only problem is, I'm a n00b when it comes to tube amps and 'dialing in' the eq, which makes choosing my first tube amp a difficult process for me, because in a sense my ear for tone is not fully developed. I realize that tone is subjective, but getting some UG input is always good!

Anyway, my birthday is coming up in a few days and my dad says he will let me spend $800-1000 on a tube amp, preferably a head, all used, I gig. I play hard rock and some metal like breaking benjamin, hinder, avenged sevenfold, incubus, etc.

So far I really like the Mesa Single Rec, the Carvin Legacy or V3, the line 6 Spider Valve, the tiny terror. Any obscure amps im not thinking of? HELP! I don't want to make the mistake of buying a crap amp!

Thank you!!

the tiny terror is a pretty solid choice in that price range. its a great sounding tube amp at the perfect volume, great for gigging, recording, versatile.

, well not by the time you add an OD pedal. But most people use OD pedals in front of 5150s anyway.

Only problem with the tiny terror is you're pretty much stuck with the same voicing due to lack of EQ.

Awesome user name

I would have a look at a used Peavey 5150. It should be able to do all that you need as long as you don't want amazing sounding cleans. You can pretty up the clean channel with a chorus pedal if you really want.

The tiny terror is good from what I've been told but I've never played one so I guess you will have to be the judge. Not very heavy or versatile.

You don't really need a head, a combo will do the same job just as well. The only difference is that you can't mix and match speaker cabs which isn't really a big deal.

I have a Peavey Classic 50. Although it can't do ultra high gain stuff it does hard rock perfectly and with an overdrive pedal combined with an EQ pedal you will be able to get it to sound fairly heavy. Its a really versatile amp, I would recommend it for most things. However, like I said, it wont do really heavy stuff without a pedal of some sort. (please don't go out and buy a $60 BOSS pedal D: )

The Classic 30 is basicly the same amp with some slight variations and even though its a lower wattage it is still just as loud (Besides, you want good tone not lots of volume, right?)

There's a pretty good chance you could pick up a laney VH100 or similar for that price. The carvins you listed are a pretty good choice, good company. There are used Mesa F series amps less than your budget too.

If you want good cleans and a hard rock and metal tone then I would recommend either

A) a Peavey 5150 w/ a chorus pedal

or

B) A Peavey Classic 50/30 with an overdrive pedal and an EQ.

Keep in mind that these are just suggestions for amps I have experience in. There are probably better amps out there.

A 5150 would not be suitable for those bands he listed, do any of you read the thread or just go high gain=5150.

A 5150 won't do Incubus.

The TS amp selection is all over the place.. Randall, Marshall, H&K, Bogner, Mesa and not a Peavey in sight...

I'm going to have to go with a used Randall MTS on this one. And Get modules as you get cash to cover the full line up tastes.
#20
I think a JCM 800 or 900 would work well. Maybe the Bogner Alchemist. The Randall MTS is a good option too, can't go wrong with unlimited preamp options (as long as you have 200 bucks to spend)!

I think it's because his title said that he wants a high gain amp. But for the bands he listed, no a 5150 would not be suitable. He shouldn't need a high gain amp for Incubus...

I can't recommend any as I'm new to this as well. Go to a local shop and try some out. That's my best recommendation

For the bands you said in your original post I'd probably say a single rect or a JCM800/900. A 5150 is too high gain and too rash for those bands imo.

Look for used JCMs either the 800 or the 900 will work. You might also try to find a Mesa Single/Double Rectifier. Carvins are also supposed to be pretty good, I've never played one but you might see if you can try one out.

The Peavey 5150/6505 amps are lame if you want nice cleans tones. for Playing Incubus... ugh.

You don't want anything overly compressed, so H&K is not a bad option, although one or two of their amps are a little "digital" for my tastes.

The Mesa's are nice for most styles of music and fit quite well in a band situation.

You could look for a Carvin amp. Possibly a V3, Legacy or the MTS.

Also, a Bogner Alchemist is a lovely amp.

This is a nice piece of kit, particularly if you are into the British, thin grit that you find from Marshall and Laney.
