have you ever gone to the local music shop, pulled down an artist model and just been appalled by how it sounds, feels or plays. i know i have.

recently i went to guitar center and was playing around on a few strats, i pulled down the john mayer strat and honestly i think this is the biggest hunk of junk I've played. i mean it looks beautiful, but the neck is thick and sticky and the sound.... well just Isn't worth $2000.

tell me your stories. feel free to post pictures etc

actually this happened to me recently

i went down to an independent music shop just to browse and i saw this stratocaster that, from a distance, looked like model in the road worn series. So i went over to it and saw that the neck was damaged, the pickups had rust on them, and two knobs were missing. Now i didnt know much about the road worn series but i knew that when pickups get rust, its a bad sign. one of the reps asked me if i was looking to purchase the guitar, and then offered me the guitar for 1500. i told him that the only person u are going to sell this guitar to is sum wall steet fat cat who knows nothing about music. to sum it up, i called him out on the guitar and i was "escorted" out of the store, but i dont think hes going to try to sell that guitar anymore

Doesn't the John Mayer Strat have "special" pickups with scooped mids? Some people like that tone, most normal people however do not.

so basically, you're saying just because it doesn't fit YOUR style, and you don't like it, then it's a complete piece of worthless crap because all guitars in the world should all revolve around you?

some people like strats like that, and its probably worth the $2000 to them to have a strat like that.

imagine that? someone in the world that isnt a metalhead/shreadtard, most people woulda never known!

Actually he's a really nice guy, a SICK guitar player, and extremely smart when it comes to being successful in the music industry. Just to throw that out there.

any of the road worn series, why in the world would someone want to pay extra for a guitar that looks like it's had the **** beat out of it BEFORE it's ever been played, especially when they ain't even the ones that beat it?

For the same reason people buy pre-faded, pre-torn jeans.

In my opinion, all the artist series are way overpriced.

Nothing in this thread makes sense. Starts are usually fairly priced until recently the price of them has risen.

I love how people diss fender, but they don't realize that fender actually owns Jackson and a few other companies that these people "love".

I'm just waiting for a woodstock Hendrix signature strat...

i love john mayers tone but when i picked up that guitar it really sounded like moldy butt. it was just bland and mediocre.

i think the american deluxe has a far better tone for a lot cheaper price. i just wish fender would stop producing crappy instruments and putting them under an artist name and selling them for a crap load of money.

I've played most of the artists series strats. The only one I played that didn't appeal to me was the Eric Clapton strat, of all things. You don't have to hate a person to not like their artist series guitar. I personally love Eric, but the guitar just doesn't do it for me. I played the Mayer strat, and thought it was really nice actually. I'm not a big fan of artist series guitars in general though.

If you think about it, you can make your own replica's of whatever guitar you want, and it shouldn't be much different. For instance, Eric Clapton likes his guitars set-up just like they come from the factory for the most part, so I could just go buy an American standard guitar in black with maple fretboard, change the pickups and I've got an Eric Clapton style guitar. The artist series guitars are just ways for companies to raise the price without needing a good reason other than the name signed on the headstock.

Yeah, they're called Little Dippers, and they're only found in the JM Strat. It's a beautiful guitar, and I think it's got a pretty nice tone if you ask me.

One of the 60's roadworns I played was actually incredible, others were not. But at $900 for a mexi I cant see it as a value

Although I love DG and the Black Strat I find it hard to think of dishing out $5,000 for a new strat like the David Gilmour

Best value out there has to be the Jimmie Vaughn Strat.
Hot Tex Mex pickups, vintage hardware, American parts, great feeling soft V neck and thin paint
I got one used for $250 a couple months back

One of the reasons other than the guitar having pickups Fender does not sell seperately is that the guitar has John Mayer's name on it as someone else said.

However, I do find that some artist series guitars have certain specs that the standard does not have. Currently I've been GASing for a Eric Johnson signature strat in 2 tone sunburst. I know a lot of the specs on it don't come with a standard (Hell, even the wiring for the tone controls is different). So can I justify almost $2,500 on it? No. That's why you browse ebay till you find one for $1,500 or so.

Also, in some cases the artist series of any brand sometimes comes with special pickups (Of course) or certain colors that aren't usually used.

The SRV signature Strat, the Am Standard Strat and the American Vintage Strats.

The Am Vintage Strats don't have any reason to cost so much more than a Standard, yet they do cost a couple hundred more.

The Am Standard Strats are only £100 less than the Am Deluxe yet have far less features and the general quality is noticeably lower. Why buy an Am Standard when the Deluxe is so much better and costs so little more?

The SRV Strat because most of it's unique features are things that the average player will find more of a hindrance than anything and yet it sits in the shops here at £1600 while a Deluxe is £950.

That's the Ltd version it's supposed to be cheap. The esp has blackouts

They both have blackouts.. NOW...
But before he actually used the EMGHZ.

That, and the pinstripe paint was running a bit :-/ So it was pretty disappointing overall...

Actually he has his own signature pickup they're EMG passive. So the new ones comes with HZ or Blackouts.

But i didn't think it was a bad guitar just over priced.
#31
Well, The sticky neck was due to being painted..
The running paint just looked unprofessional, a lemon.
The pickup was just awful... I tried an Ibanez with IBZ-Dimarzio pickups which killed this thing... Even my mom commented on the sound difference XD

I think he still does. The big difference is if you get the real sig it has gainboosters and modifications to the preamp that makes the pickup sound totally different if I remember correctly. I know that there´s at least a gain booster.
