that depends on:
what kind of style you are planning to play.
what gear do you use (all gears not just your guitar :P)
what price range

more info = more anwsers =)

maybe you can look at the artist you're playing alot of music from if you want to get a tone like his. you could check out what pickups he uses.

seymour duncans.

seymour duncan is more of an metal pickup if you ask me.

If he wants all around he might be better off with EMG's or something like that

What? You got it backwards

Edit:

Besides, Seymour Duncan is not a pickup. Its a company, the name of the owner of the company and they have pickups for every type of music.

yeah dude your the first person to say duncan only makes pickups for metal. lol

read about the 1000 pickups they make on duncans site

its amazing the things people recommend and why.

tell us what you play and what you like and we can give you some ideas of what we think is good but its also a matter of personal choice. takes time to find what you like. hold your money tight and wait it out until you play your dream guitar and just copy the pickups from that.

OP, changing pickups won't make much difference if you have a crappy amp.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

I used to think the Seymour Duncans jazz and JB were kinda lame but when I got rid of that guitar It brought a tear to my eye. its true what they say. JB is the pickup you want if you were on a desert island and could only have one guitar.

True, if the amp is really crappy. But there are decent, inexpensive amps out there that aren't tube.

Epi makes a TON of different LP models with varying quality pickups...

The first think a kid wants is to change his pickups.
This isn't always the best first move.
Evaluate your guitar and amp.
Maybe the best first move is some fretwork/setup.
Making your guitar more playable is sometimes more useful than pickups.
Or maybe you could benefit from a new nut.
or tuners
or controls / output jack
or a better amp.

Determine the weakest link in your current gear and target that, first.
IF that happens to be pickups, go there. Chances are, it won't be.
