My cousin just told me humbucker pick ups are bad, and the guitar i just bought has humbuckers... Which pick ups are good then? The ones without the dots?

Your cousin's an idiot. End of discussion.
More than half the guitars made these days have at least one humbucker.

There's good and bad of any pickup, be it single coils, P-90's, Humbuckers, or anything else you can think of.

Humbuckers are not bad in any way.
They are simply pickups with a metal case over them.
It's the kind of thing that is different for different people.
Like whatever floats your boat kinda thing.
Research different kinds to learn more about them.

lul. your cousin is epic fail. Like EPIC fail. What a moron. Anyways, humbuckers imo are better than single coils. and the pickups without the dots (probably actives or fake actives) are good too. all personal preference. lol

Depends on the pups, but to make the generalazation that all humbuckers are bad is the peak of stupidity when it comes to guitars. Humbuckers are made for dirtier more overdriven tones, while single coils are generally cleaner. I'm not saying single coils can't get dirty, Hendrix played out of single coils, but humbuckers are better for dirty tones. By the way what guitar did you buy and what music do you play.

Tell your cousin this for me.

Shut up, foo! I pity you, foo!

Humbuckers have their uses and sound. Single coils have their uses and sound. No one is inherently good or bad.

The ones without dots are the ones that have a cover over the pickups. Yeah humbuckers are really good for punk and metal. I shall repeat though what guitar did you buy?

By "dots" I'm assuming you mean the pole pieces: every pickup has them, but some humbuckers have a metal cover over half of them (this makes the sound a little rounder)

Those pole pieces (the "dots") are the magnetic pieces that pick up the vibration of the specific string they're under.

And yeah, your cousin doesn't know what he's talking about

Humbuckers just have a different sound than single coils, neither is better than the other.

That is not what humbuckers are, lol.

Humbuckers differ from single coils in that they use two coils of reverse polarity and winding, which acts to cancel out, or "buck" the hum.
#35
No. They're just as bad as single-coils. Both are good for different things, but saying one is all across the board bad is just daft.
