I bought some graphite (the one you buy in the squeeze-tube container) to put in the nut.

I want to know what the best way to apply it is. Help would be appreciated, I don't want to screw anything up.

You're trying too hard IMO. Just sharpen a pencil to a really fine point, and there ya go. It works great for me.

A very soft pencil with a blunt point is the best way to do it.

However, any way you get it in there is fine so long as you don't put much in. The key is less is more, you're just trying to lightly lubricate the nut so the strings don't get caught and bind in it. A toothpick, a bent out paper clip, any will be fine.
