hello, knowledgeable men and women of GB&C!

recently, i noticed my A string has been breaking frequently at the same spot. (the spot where the string makes contact with the tune-o-matic bridge)

i think perhaps that part of the bridge is cutting into the strings or something.

what should i do to make sure my strings dont keep breaking like that?

replace the saddles? or get a new TOM.

yup that would be the most obvious choice.

but.. i do remember people on here talking about "filing the saddle" or something like that. i was hoping maybe to get some detailed information about that.

take some finer grit sandpaper and fold it and sand the saddle where the string touches it.
also it MIGHT be related to the string angle coming off the back side of the TOM, if you have the gibson style tailpiece you can adjust that...

You can file them. PRetty much a straightforward process.

So i should just file that small space in there that holds the string?

Yes, definitely clean it. Then burn it. Kill it with fire!

srsly, unless money is a big problem, I'd consider that a good candidate for replacement.

wimmen? there's minichibi, but she only stops in once in a while.

and jenny does cross the boarder from gear over to our side on occasion.

Ewww...that bridge looks gnarsty. You should definitely clean it up and then sand it.

And "women" of GB&C? Do you not know Rule 30?

don't forget to add a little lube to the string contact point especially after filing.

Jenny needs to sow her wild oats with random Gibsons and Taylors she picks up in bars before she settles down with a PRS.
