Hey, my bro is looking for a new bass and amp, interested in metal and rock. Budget of 300$ willing to go used. Preferably a 5 string bass was looking at the B-55 but then he wouldnt have any money left for the amp. Thanks in advance.

The FAQ on here has some good options...here's my idea.

The ibanez GSR200. It has a reputation for being a very good starter bass. relatively high quality for the price, and ok tone.

And the Acoustic B20 amplifier. this will stretch the budget to $350 US but it will have a better sound ,by far IMO, than any amp with the usual 8" speaker in this wattage range.

I figured going a bit above budget was ok since you were ok with used because you could just look out for the gear in the used market. Other great bass to look for in the used market are the Squier Vintage Modified series basses.

Jazz bass, very versatile.

Precision bass, a very punchy sound, often used for punk but has other uses, for example: Steve harris from Iron Maiden uses a Precision bass with flatwound strings.

EDIT: didn't notice the 5string preference. I play a higher end ibanez BTB and Ibanez is kind of known for the quality of their low range basses. It appears that the 5 string of this model may be discontinued but here's a link to the 4string version. just keep an eye our for the ibanez btb205 instead of this btb200. Of course specs may not be the same on the older model.

He's gonna need a pretty heavy duty amp to be heard with a 50watt tube amp if it's turned up to get that nice tube tone. probably at least 200 watts SS. I'm thinking you'll have to up the price range, even if you go used. Here's some of the best suggestions i can find for you then.

Acoustic B200. acoustic amps are known to be quite versatile and pretty loud for their wattage. Also reliable, while keeping a low price.

Peavey is a good brand, I always seem to buy peavey amps, no matter how many different amps i try. this one is pretty cheap for the wattage but it's a new model so good luck finding it used.

Ashdown, haven't played an Ashdown in ages but they still have a good reputation on here.
