I have a strat that I am either going to place a bridge humbucker in or do the Ultra Strat Mod to. One of the Ultra Strat Mod's features is series and parallel switching, which is supposed to make the neck and middle arrangement sound like a neck humbucker and the middle and bridge arrangement sound like a bridge humbucker. Or so I've heard. I wanted to know if anyone had experience in this mod or series and parallel wiring with single coils. What should I do to my strat and how do the "humbuckers" sound?

Not really.

The distance between coils and the pickup design results in a sound that's quite different from a HB. Series wiring will give you a "meaner, meatier" tone, though.

I always put crazy wiring setups in my guitars,
and I really like the Neck and Middle in series sound.

Another good one is Middle and Bridge in series, out of phase.

But an out of phase position doesn't cancel hum, right?

No, it doesn't, but you've got to hear it to understand it. It's not like you'll suddenly be overpowered by hum or anything.

It does if the two pickups are wound the same.

For instance: Neck and Bridge on a Strat are both normally wound.
Use them together out of phase and they will cancel hum.
Neck and Middle will only cancel when they are in phase.
This is because the Middle is RWRP.
