In the course of the summer I need to get a new cell phone and a mp3-player (have been using a minidisc player for three years, time for a change). Finally it hit me that it might be a good idea to get an iPhone, do the ol' two-in-one trick.

But I've heard a lot of good and bad from various insecure sources, so I thought I'd ask here:

To all of you iPhone users; is it any good?

texting= a bitch

storage= a bitch (because i have 100 gigs of music on my computer. I had the iphone for 2 weeks, then i returned it and got the 120 gig and a blackberry.)

dont get it unless you plan on having unlimited internet... had a friend get a monthly bill for over $2,000 because he didn't get unlimited internet and kept saying he'd never use it.

Ok, storage space is probably not a problem for me, since I only have about 9 gigabytes of music...

I honestly reckon the best part about it (I don't have one mind you) would be the apps thrown into the mix. It really just depends on what you're looking for, I'm happy enough with my nokia 3120c and an 8GB card for my music, so meh.

Although, they're uber cheap, and they can do a fair bit. So if you want one, go for it lol.

no, it's useless.

seriously

i got one with my contract and was like woooo best thing ever, then i turned it on.......
you cant just put ya sim in it and go, it has to be registered via itunes which is a bitch
and then the navigation on the menu is balls
so i sold it on ebay and went out and got me a nokia N958GB which is seriously awesome, has a built in mp3 player (and a VERY good one at that), 8gb internal storage, buttons not touch screen so it wont break or f*ck up if you have any dust or anything on the screen, and here's the best bit, you won't get people thinking you're just doing it for the fashion statement, i didn't get it for the fashion statement originally i got it cos it was either that or some samsung and i cant stand samsung phones...
but my reccomendation would be a nokia N95 (or even some of the newest N series) and an Mp3 player... if you wanna sell-out go for an ipod but there are much better and cheaper ones out there...
Belief is a beautiful armour but makes for the heaviest sword.

If you want a good phone, don't get an iPhone. If you want to dick about with terrible apps all day, get an iPhone.

I don't really understand why people think of Apple products as some sort of seperate species unto themselves. There are plenty of phones - smart or otherwise - that play music these days. That goes for just about anything Apple comes out with really.

That said, I do have an iPhone. I can't say I would have spent my own money on one though. (It was a gift.)

As far as functionality, it does what it's supposed to. I like the qwerty keyboard for texting but it's a bitch to use when drunk. I like the whole touch screen thing in that you get a keyboard when you need it, otherwise you have the full screen for whatever you happen to be doing. The camera isn't the best though if that's your sort of thing. You're essentially carrying a little GPS device as well with the maps thing. Direct access to the iTunes store is pretty useful as well and goes along nicely with the wi-fi. The Safari browser is easy to use as well.

The battery life is pretty good, at least for me. The power usage is minimal while idle, but with regular use mine needs charged maybe every three days or so.

If you're set on an iPhone then it's a pretty good piece of kit, but there are plenty of other options to consider if all you need is a phone + media player.

EDIT: Like the guy up there said, Nokia is a good alternative with the N95.

And 3.0 has been an absolute **** for me. I can't get access to the internet now because apparently I "don't have a provider" or whatever. Something to do with new features being added that weren't part of my original service or some crap I'm guessing.

iphone is genuinely a rip off. i lolled at the new iphone 3gs, now all th iphone 3g users dont get full iphone 3.0 functionality and it overheats to the extent of leaving permenant marks on the touchscreen. what a rip off

My bro has one and he likes it but as always with Apple products, they're overpriced and a fashion statement. The LG Viewty is cool and it has a 5 megapixel camera. The iPhone camera aint great.

Does the same thing, but cheaper.

Got a 2Gb memory card with mine, which is plenty of space for songs.

Just get a regular phone then buy a 120Gb iPod Nano for all your music.

i think its good, all you people going "waa i cant fit my 100 million songs that i must listen to every day and i love every single one of them" need to man up. really, a 16GB iphone will hold 3600 songs and i think that enough to tide you over until your next sync.

there are some glitches with stuff crashing occasionally but all in all i think its awesome. the prices are affordable and its so easy to use, like browsing the internet can be such a bitch on some phones but the tough screen makes it easy

sony ericsson walkman phone / nokia n series will do the job well. the screen on my sony ericsson w910i cracked, so i'm stuck with an older phone, and i realised it can do pretty much everything i need. Really, any phone with decent functionality as a phone/media player which has memory card capabilities will do what you need. Only point in an iphone is the apps, my brother has one, there's nothing special about it unless you spend a ****load of cash on the internet/apps.

This, it is very much overhyped, I dont have one but friend does, there not very good, half the applications are extremely pointless and it's supposed to be a pain in the ass to use, get cheaper mp3 phone, the Ipones just a poor quality mp3/phone that got a jacked up price because its Apple product.

Agreed. I have a phone, and a 120GB iPod, and it's perfectly fine. You don't need an all-in-one, I hold up just fine with two different devices.
#37
Exactly. Plus if it's all in one, and the battery runs out then you'll lose the ability to listen to music and make calls.

Heard the battery life on the iphone was pretty ****ty, then if the battery breaks your phones screwed, least thats what it was like with the Ipods.

It's fine, but there is so much crap like wi-fi and the phone itself that once you get everything set up there won't be much more room for music.
