I was looking for sites about exotic guitar scales and happened to come come across this link today and was wondering if anybody here actually used a phone book like the dude talks about or just wants to share their ideas on it.

Nah don't find it that special.

You learn how to link notes to numbers.

Nothing about rhythm or harmony, or how a melody actually corresponds to the harmony.

I don't see it as anything useful other than a fun thing to do if you can't think of what to play.

Well, in all honesty, I never saw it as some super-great learning tool.
It just seems like something fun to do.

If anything, it would just be helping you in grain box shapes in to your head. You wouldn't really know the notes on the fret board from it.

This is pretty great for learning shapes I guess, but for the scale itself not so much, since it's all over the fretboard.

actually it has nothing to do with learning scale shapes or box patterns. the article said you use the phone numbers to tell you which scale degrees to play. so that would just be notes, and the notes are all over the fretboard. it never really said how to play those notes. it just said to play the notes in that order. it would be for making riffs or melodies.

Yeah, Blind is right.
It still comes down to the player to make creative use out of it, the same as if they were box patterns or shapes.
