yes - if the strings buzz, that's too much. also if they don't play right for you. otherwise if everything plays and sounds fine, don't worry about it.

This. The amount of slack also depends on the string gauge and scale length of the instrument as well. A shorter scale length will have more "slack" and I think lower gauges have more slack.
