Is the orange finish going to be transparent? (please say yes!) If this had a a birdseye fretboard, pearloid pickguard and off-center fret dots ... and I had money, I would be exceedingly tempted.

I'm with cam. Strats, while classic, are everywhere. You should do like a Jaguar/Jazzmaster shape, but keep everything else.

I'm doing a strat for 3 reasons... Its a straight forward classic shape, I have a black pickguard for one and I've always wanted a strat with solid wood (the epi copy I have is plywood) and a hard tail bridge... Trust me I plan on a jag in the future

it can definitely be customized at this point and is for sale... but I build with intent to keep unless someone comes along and wants to buy it... which I'm hoping will happen

well Phil, if you ever decide you want to graduate from the boring-as-hell stock strat wiring, lemme know. With a superswitch and a push-pull pot we could come up with something for 3 SCs that will rock the house.

^This.
Please do something to make this build really unique. I'd like to see lots of cool wiring stuff. Treble boosters, built in distortion, everything.

SYK... i'm listening...

I just took delivery on 20 push/pull pots - too bad they're all 500k long shaft pots

*looks on allparts for short shaft 250k pots*

let me know what you're thinking, meng. I'm getting PM'ed about selling this guitar already and I haven't even started it yet... it'll be great to see what it could turn into

k, so here's what I'm thinking.

1-volume, 1-tone.

SuperSwitch selects 2 single pickup selections and 3 two pickup selections.

You choose which single pickup choices.

Two pickup choices are:
Bridge - Middle
Middle - Neck
Bridge - Neck ... out of phase.
push-pull determines if two pickups are in parallel or series.
does nothing on the selection of single pickups.

You choose the switching order.
Whatever position you want the selections to occur on the switch.

Phil, I have a full-on setting on one of my strats. It sounds very mellow. It would be helped with better pickups, but probably still not my style.
Bridge + Neck however, yowza I loves it.

how about something like this with a blend pot?

http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/pdf/WiringDiagram_Strat_Blender.pdf
That's just basically a volume pot added in to a standard parallel wiring scheme. Simple, effective. But it wouldn't fit with what I just proposed.

kinda nice and jangly/complex when the pickups are in parallel. a bit dark when they're in series.

The blender you linked to will give you all 3 in parallel, in a couple of positions.

i'd definitely do a jaguar with a pearloid pg in candy apple red but i'd probably do a 24.75" scale because I like to downtune a half step sometimes

K, Phil. New wiring plan:

Standard Strat 5-way

One volume
One tone
Blender
(push-pull on one of the above)

Normal SSS Strat selections.
Bridge
Bridge + Middle
Middle
Middle + Neck
Neck

Pull puts the middle pickup in series with other pickups selected on the 5-way.
Bridge * Middle
Middle
Middle
Middle
Middle * Neck

Blender adds Neck whenever Bridge is selected and Blender is rotated CCW
OR it adds Bridge whenever Neck is selected and Blender is rotated CCW

Cheap parts, not too difficult, extra tone choices beyond stock.

why didn't you just bend the sapele top over the forearm carve?

And your doing a solid colour over the sapele?
#25
because it's a scrap wood build... it's supposed to be down and dirty quick and easy - the sapele is being put on for 2 reasons 1) because the poplar was too thin and 2) because I wanted to see if the 3/8" (10mm) laminate top did anything to the overall tone of the guitar

i didn't give a rats ass about steam bending or anything like that... 1) because the top is probably too thick to do it efficiently and 2) because I didn't want to spend all night sitting there with my clothes iron trying to get the wood to bend

and yes, i'm doing solid color over the sapele... I have a lot more of it and it's full thickness (2" thick). I may do a natty finish SG with it

1/4" is a far cry from 3/8"... there's 3.2mm of additional wood that would need to be bent around the carve and again, solid color. nobody will know unless they ask

what do you want me to make out of the sapele, cam? les paul?

K, Phil. New wiring plan:

... obscene number of tonal options ...

This is a really solid setup.

Phil, I recorded a couple soundclips for you and posted them on my profile. I can't do any of the series combinations with my strat, but these clips include neck + bridge in parallel and all 3 pickups in parallel. Part of the beauty of this setup is that it only requires one SPST. Squier strat with stock SSS pickups through a clean Valve Junior. Each clip is the same segment 3 times: bridge, b+n, b+m+n.

I always wondered why fender didn't take the initiative to make hardtail strats more mass produced. I mean seriously. trying to build one off ebay for cheap is kinda hard do to the rarity. warmoth has two bodies in stock painted black for $185 each. ebay has a used MIM body with HSH route, no thanks.
