Hi guys,
I'm learning the Canon Rock arrangement by Jerry C at the moment, and I kind of got stuck at this part:

e|---------------9-12/17-----------------21-17--------17-12------------------
B|------------10--------14---------------------17------------14--------------
G|----------9--------------14--------------------18------------14------------
D|-------11------------------14----------------------------------14----------
A|-7-12------------------------12/16---------------------------------12------
E|-************PART*ONE*************-----**PART*2**---*****PART**3*****------

Most of the notes above are 16ths, and the song is played on 200 bpm, and that is my goal.
At the moment I can play ^this^ part at 70 bpm max. I need to go 3 times faster.

My problem is that I don't know if my picking technique is correct.

First, for the first half of PART ONE 17th note on e-string included, I alternate down picking and up picking. The pattern i use is: up down down down down down up down. This seems to be the quickest to me, and I guess I'll get quicker on this bit by practicing a lot.
Then for the second bit of PART ONE I kind of sweep pick the strings up, while doing a small barré with my ringfinger on the 14th fret.
For PART TWO, after just downpicking that 21th note on the e-string I again 'sweep' up to play those 3 notes on the 3 highest strings, I fret those two 17's with my index and add my middle finger to fret that 18th on the G-string.
And for the last part, PART THREE I downpick that 17th fret on the e-string then again 'sweep' my pick over the strings as I do a small barré on the 14th fret with my ringfinger.

Does this sound right? I've made a Guitar Pro file with this part of the song only, and I make it loop and every time it loops it increases in bpm, but I'm hardly noticing any improvement in my speed. Any tips? Am I doing something wrong?

Thats how I do it. All sweep picking at that part. Keep playing it at 70 till its perfect, then 75 till perfect, then 80 untill perfect, etc etc etc. Eventually you'll be able to get 200.

once you get comfortable with sweeping, which might take a day or a week depending on how much you practice, then the speed will come pretty quick.

Ok thanks guys (reported BlisteringDDj).

I guess I maybe should to find some sweep picking lessons on UG, and learn maybe some slower sweeping riffs as well.
Next to that I'll continue to try building speed with GP.

Damn, I got a warning.

Okay, I'll try to say something useful.

It's all sweep picking. On the A-string, from fret 7 to 12, hammer-on, then on the e string from the 9th to 12th fret, downstroke, then upstroke, and slide up. The other two sweep you start with a downstroke, then an upstroke. You could do pull offs as well though.

Seems to me your technique is all right, I'd do the same thing. The only thing you have to do is speed it up.

i swept it?

if that helps you out any?It reminded me of this Jason Becker line

hell its almost identical

because it's an A major sweep? Nothing to do with becker. This is like saying people can't use the A chord because someone else has used it ;P

Added pickstrokes as I would probably play a section like that. I don't know if that's what you were thinking but there it is, compare and contrast

Ok so I guess I should properly learn sweeping before I continue to learn this bit and possibly make up some screwed up sweep/picking technique.

Thanks for the help.

Oh and Fenderhead1946, nobody was asked about what they think of the song. I specifically and clearly asked for help or opinions about how to play this part.

It's like making a post saying "I hate Floyd Rose" on a topic about problems with setting up FR on an Ibanez or something.

Could someone write fingerings for this?
Left hand is the main issue here for me personally, not the right.

Ok, let's say in real life you enter a book store and you ask a worker "Do you have the new Harry Potter?" and he says "I hate Harry Potter!" and walks off.

Helpful or unhelpful?

Haha, I deserved the warning! I didn't get banned, but I am currently ranked as a "smartass"... One more warning and I'm out.

Its unhelpful to the topic in hand, therefore equalling spam.
In general, im very relaxed about the warnings / bans and rarely hand out any.
