I'm not a genre-junkie like many people on here. And I've always wondered this. What really sets metalcore and nu-metal apart from plain old 'metal?'

Please be nice to me.

I sometimes have a hard time picking metalcore out from metal. But nu-metal is very obvious from the dropped tuning and vocal style. Nu-metal also tends to be more "rappy".

o_q I have deduced.

Numetal has rap influences,eg rap-style vocals, djs, etc. metalcore has hardcore influences. eg breakdowns, yelling-style vocals.
Soon, death metal's drums will be so fast only computers will be able to listen to it.

94? Not bad. It shall improve >=)

honestly, you have to define MEtalcore as new metal with hardcore influences because otherwise the whole thrash metal movement is metalcore

stupid elitists cant remember their history

It really doesn't matter, pretty much any modern metal band that isn't death, black or the new thrash metal, is considered metalcore. Metalcore is metal, but elitists just made up the sub-genre because they don't like the emotional influenced metal in music these days being considered metal. Nu-metal is just rap influenced hard rock/metal. Linkin park, limp bizkit, old Slipknot, Korn and etc. are examples of nu-metal.

EDIT: To the posts of the few slow ones above me, he is obviously being sarcastic. He is just being ironic because opinions are usually vice versa.

Thanks to everyone for giving me straight-up responses. It's just been bothering me because I saw a band called 'Unearth' a few weeks back and didn't really know what to classify them as.

I'm a fan of them. They're metalcore. On the fairly thrashy side of it, but still metalcore.

That last one you posted definitely didn't sound like a straight up metal band to me. Sounds more like a death metal band.

Aye. The best example of 'straight-up' metal would be something like Lamb of God or Machine Head.

well yeah, Quo vadis is melodic death metal (a pretty technical one).

Actually, it's not that stupid. They're style is very reminiscent of pantera. Log sounds a bit more like testament to me, but that doesn't make them any better.

I'm completely serious. You need proof? Here's some

So both have thrashy intros? So what. Wait until you get about 20 or 30 seconds into the song and they're both very different.

All i'm saying is that pantera and log both play groove. similar sounds? yes. Testament and log have similar guitar sounds as well.

I'd still say straight-up 21st centry metal in the case of MH and LoG.

If you're going to lump everything to sub-sub-sub-genres then nothing is straight-up metal, is it?

no

There is no such thing as plain metal, it's a misconception made by genre classification nooblets

LoG is groove metal, as is Machine Head

Both rip off pantera extensively
