Do you gig?????
And if you get a good tube amp, you won't need a distortion pedal, just a good overdrive. If you gig, then look at the B52 At-100. If not, look for a Blackstar HT-5 with a Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer.

But-
Do you gig?
Budget?
Closest major city?
Willing to go used?

-Gibson LP VM
-Silvertone Kentucky Blue
-MXR CC Delay
-Ibanez TS-9
-Egnater Rebel 20
-Avatar 1x12

My rig is simple
Haha. UG's Chuck just said chuck. haha

no gigging, budget is roughly $250. maybe a bit more. closest major city?? i'm in connecticut, so hartford or boston i guess. yes i'd be willing to purchased used.

Crate Vintage Club 20. I bet you could find one for 200$, not perfect for a metal sound. But alot better then your current amp. Get a Digitech Badmonkey or a Cool Cat Drive aswell. Good OD clones.
#7
I have a Peavey Valveking. The Clean channel is very decent for the price, the OD channel his horribly dark and muddy. Stock, of course. I wouldn't recommend one, not really worth it IMO.

Blackstar HT-5:

To be honest, you may be better off saving up a little more. There are very few amps that I can personally think of that will be worth the upgrade from the Vypyr. This be worth trying, although, as I said, it's not much of a step up.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Vox-Valvetronix-AD30VT-Amplifier_W0QQitemZ220446799467QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3353a7366b&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1205|293%3A1|294%3A50

Peavey Classic 30 (will most likely go over your budget):
http://cgi.ebay.com/Peavey-Classic-30-Black-w-footswitch-Perfect_W0QQitemZ140331027320QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item20ac618b78&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A3|66%3A4|39%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A200

Peavey Valveking. As said, this isn't a great amp, but it's one of the better ones in your strict budget:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Peavey-Valveking-112-Tube-amp_W0QQitemZ110410412633QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item19b4f93259&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A3|66%3A4|39%3A1|293%3A2|294%3A200

This is a nice amp. It needs a cabinet and a pedal to put it into higher gain territory, so it will, no doubt, go over your budet:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BLACKHEART-LITTLE-GIANT-5W-GUITAR-AMP-HEAD_W0QQitemZ360167712870QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item53dbab2866&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A3|66%3A4|39%3A1|293%3A2|294%3A200

Same applies to this:

That's all I can think of right now.

It'll be tough finding a "good" tube amp (subjective, I know) for $250. I personally (again IMO), wouldn't touch a Valveking with a 10' pole; however, you should take a listen, 'cause you may love it -- to each his own.

The cheapest tube amps I consider "good" (remember, IMO) are:

Fender Blues Jr. ($300 - 600, 15W 1x12)
Vox Nightrain ($450, head only)
Blackheart Handsome Devil ($450, 15W, 1x12)
Blackheart HT5 Combo ($399, 5W 1x10)

And even take these suggestions with a grain of salt, as I play blues and classic rock...not metal (or at least not anything other than "classic metal" (i.e., no super high gain) -- Maiden, Priest, Metallica -- all of which I can play using my current rig).

I'd suggest you save until you can afford the gear you really want. I'm glad I scrimped and saved for 2 years to buy my current rig: John Suhr SSS Classic, Carl Martin Quattro, Suhr Badger 18W head, and Avatar 4x12 cab with Celestion Vintage 30s. It ran me about $3500 all together, but brother...it was worth the wait!!!

Now...that said, if you don't gig and you're not a complete tone freak, think about saving up a bit more and picking up one of the Peavey Vypyr tube amps and the Sanpera pedal. From what I've heard you can get pretty much any metal tone you want with that combo. Also, from what I've heard, it blows the SS Vypyrs out of the water.

how does it sound with distortion pedals? or would i even need one? if so do you have any recommendations?

thanks
Check edit.

The Blackstar responds okay to pedals. It doesn't really need a distortion pedals unless you want to play Death Metal, Grindcore or something similar. The amp has the highest amount of onboard gain for under $300 that is tube/valve and that isn't designed for gigging.

What pedals are you thinking of combining it with?
#13
Just for the record, you can "gig" with any amp of any wattage so long as you mic it.

I regularly play small clubs with my Blackstar HT5 and Fender Blues Jr and my 18W Badger is probably the largest amp I'll ever need.

The thing that matters is the clean headroom you need to play your music. If you need more headroom, then you'll probably want a 30-50W amp; otherwise, 5-15W is fine.

not really sure, was just wondering if it would need a pedal for distortion.

say i'd be willing to spend $500. what would you suggest then?

thanks for all the responses.

Have you been to a store and tried any amplifiers out, yet?
To be honest, mate, it sounds like you may need to. I don't mean to patronize, but only then will you really be able to see how much you want to spend, not how much you have to spend. It will also depict what kind of amplifier you are looking for, as they are bracketed into charatacories - which is explained in the stickies of this forum.

Say for instance you play blues and want a bedroom amp for under $500. A Blackheart Little Giant is something one would suggest, as is a Peavey Classic 30 second-hand.
So it's important, in my eyes, to be able to determine what it is you want.
Some like the idea of a high-gain distortion pedal played through a simple blues amp, some prefer the more 'classic' method of discovering metal tones. The only real way that you can determine what is is you want, as a musiciain, is to head to your local guitar shop and try out everything and anything, no matter how much it costs.

But, for $500, I'd suggest any of these amps:

A decent Peavey.

Similar to the Blackstar, but needs a cabinet and is pricier.

I have a vk 212 that I use for metal it needed a little help to get there but the amp is all stock I put a mxr 10 band eq in the effects loop and a ibz ts-9 tubescreamer with a mxr dyna comp compressor in line with a schecter w/duncan design actives. I will say i get some noise with this but its not like i can't play over it and it goes away, times are tight for folks right now so some sacrifices have to be made, but with some focused add ons you can get a decent metal sound out a vk 212 and people are selling them on ebay at a good price. Good luck with your search but most importantly keep on jamming.
