Picture this: You are just browsing the placid peaceful lawns of the interwebs, listening to your hopelandish sigur ros, then suddenly there comes a loud noise. YOU RUSH TO FIND ITS ORIGIN. You swim beneath 24 layers of Pit threads and porn tabs to find the source. Then, AHA! It's an offending myspace or Ug profile with music streaming off an an unwanted tangent. You turn it off.

Now I do not have anything against making available your favorite music to stream, but please please please, for the love of god, do not make it AUTO-PLAYing I know there are a number of Ugers with profiles like these. Would it be too much too ask for them to deselect the autoplay function and let the decision of whether to listen of not rest on the placid peaceful sheep of their fellow pitpotomouses?

Welcome to UG. The place where people take memes and run them so far into the ground, mods actually have to start banning people because of it.

I don't really have mine auto-play, but I don't think it's rude. Are you gonna listen to their music if they don't play it for you? Probably not.

I think you misunderstood. I don't mind with people playing music and streaming the files for other people to listen. However auto-play is just obnoxious. It should be considered a social misstep.

I don't know if UG has one (too lazy to check)
but I'm pretty sure myspace has an option to block profiles from autoplaying.
But anyway, would it kill you to pay attention to the tabs you open?

it's because you might not be planning on listening to it. But if it starts playing, by the time you've found it to turn it off, you might go "hey that sounds cool" and check the band out or keep listening or whatnot

I agree... all my sound goes through my stereo is usually quite loud. The worst intrusive sounds are the smiley ads that say "hello!" right through my music. Two songs playing at once is annoying, I went to the ACDC website today and it did that.

I agree TS.

Especially with them third-party music players which are always auto-play.

How would you feel if you were walking on the street and some unruly music salesmen ripped of your earphones and forced you to listen to their music?

I don't mind it when the person ramming the music out of your speakers made it. At least they have a reason to care if you listen to it. But I always hated when people would have about 8 different media embedded in their myspace, all crappy bands everyone knows, all autoplaying.

But that's what you get if you are foolish enough to venture onto myspace.

Oh, and I agree with:

i'm guessing a lot of you guys are using vista - that has a nice inbuilt feature called a 'volume mixer' (though depending on your set up it can take a while to find) but it should allow to mute noise from teh webs.

Yeah but it's annoying to have to put the volume back up when you DO want sound from your browser (YouTube, etc.)

You CHOSE to go to their site/profile, it's not like they're storming into your room with a fucking boombox you went onto THEIR site and If they want to advertise their music to you so they can advance as an artist more power to them.

Yeah, but when people obnoxiously auto-play their music... it tends to turn me away from them.

The moral of the story is, don't browse wanky profiles whilst listening to tunes.

I hate stumbling across metalcore bands that fills my speakers with over-compressed

Hahahaha no, it's not metal. I think it's "heavy" though... but not in a detuned power chord kinda way. More like in an... acoustic guitar with singing, kinda way.

Mmm yeah TS it is kind of annoying, but it's their profiles... And as someone said earlier, you did open the tab, after all.

But what about those stupid "death test" adverts?! They were all over UG at one stage. Every time I scrolled up, there'd be this loud "EHEHEHEHE".

Turn UAC off...

And for everyone saying about the ads... Firefox with Adblock is your best friend. I haven't seen an internet ad for a long, long time.

Install Flashblock too, if you don't want all the songs and stuff playing on Myspace.

Then again I don't have problems with internet sounds coming out of my computer, headphone jack and volume control is stuffed. I have to use the ipod instead, at least until I get a PCMCIA card. Good excuse anyway, the integrated sound card sounds horrible.
