I decided to be adventurous (apparently my first mistake) with my guitar, and unscrew the pole screws of my gold-covered humbucker, then take the gold cover off. Seeing the waxy mess under the cover, I replaced the cover and then strung up my guitar to discover....

The pickup sounded RADICALLY different!!!

this sounds stupid, but I don't know any other way to describe it: (Amp settings were the same for this whole experiment) I can't get a chunky palm mute out of it any more. The strumming sounds really distorted , but the palm muting doesn't at all

What's wrong UG!! help me please!

EDIT: I forgot, it's an HSS setup, and when I switch to the second position from the bottom with the 5-way switch, I get all my overdrivey sound back, because of the single coil being thrown in the equation

It probably has to do with the pole pieces. The wax just reduces feedback.

I"ve adjusted the pole pieces all the way up and all the way down, I didn't notice a difference

The wax keeps the coils in place so they don't vibrate and create feedback, or shift and degrade the sound.
Then there's this band called Slice The Cake...

Bunch of faggots putting random riffs together and calling it "progressive" deathcore.
Stupid name.

ok, I know what the wax is intended for, but I want to know why it changed the sound of my pickup so radically when I "semi-de-potted" it

First thing I'm thinking is you might have dislodged the coils somehow

well, I could get some GFS pickup, but I'm really interested in what went wrong here (even if I do need to get a new pickup), as I've never encountered this before

that screw moves in and out of a coil circuit. sometimes the coil wires break or short while youre abusing them i mean moving them.
#17
The wire used to wind em is really small. And its not that hard at all during the process of removing the cover to mess one of those connections up.
#18
hmmmm, maybe that's the culprit then. I guess I'll screw with it for a little while, if it doesn't work out, I was plannning on putting new pickups in this guitar anyway
